Tests of a Thermal Ice-Prevention System for a Wing Leading-Edge Landing-Light Installation

Description: Report discussing the creation of a thermal ice-prevention system of a bomber-type airplane to provide protection against ice and fog formations on the transparent fairing over the landing light in the wing leading edge. A comparison between the design performance and actual performance showed that the outer-surface heat-transfer coefficient was correctly predicted, but the inner-surface heat-transfer coefficient was four times as large, leading to failure of the plastic fairing.

Hydraulic Characteristics of the NACA Injection Impeller

Description: Report discussing a mock-up injection impeller created to investigate the hydraulic characteristics and limitations of the NACA injection impeller currently in use. Information about the form and magnitude of critical factors of fuel-transfer leakage and peripheral fuel distribution is provided as well as the effects of design variations of components on hydraulic characteristics. Several revisions in portions of the impeller are suggested to improve its fuel-transfer, fuel-pumping, and fuel-eq… more

The Effect of Modified Baffles and Auxiliary-Cooling Ducts on the Cooling of a Double-Row Radial Engine

Description: Report discussing testing to determine the cooling effect of modified baffles and auxiliary-cooling ducts on the rear-row cylinders of a double-row radial engine. The modified baffles were found to reduce the temperatures of the exhaust-valve seats, but did not have an effect on the valve-guide temperatures. The auxiliary-cooling ducts reduced temperatures of the exhaust-valve seats and rear spark plug gaskets.

Ground-Stand Cooling Investigation of an R-2600-22 Engine in a PBM-3D Nacelle

Description: Report discussing an investigation of the cooling characteristics of an R-2600-22 engine installed in a PBM-3D nacelle. The investigation explored the general cooling characteristics by the NACA cooling-correlation method and an investigation of specific points on the engine cylinder where cooling was critical, including the exhaust-valve-crown and number 3 cylinder.

Correlation of Engine-Cooling Data

Description: Report discusses a method of correlating engine-cooling data and its application to a representative engine-cooling test. Considerations for the correlation method are given, but the application to specific engine-cooling problems should be simple and direct. Information about experimental procedure and an example with specific values are included.

Flight and Test-Stand Investigation of High-Performance Fuels in Double-Row Radial Air-Cooled Engines 2: Flight Knock Data and Comparison of Fuel Knock Limits With Engine Cooling Limits in Flight

Description: Report discussing a comparison of the antiknock characteristics of triptane with a temperature-sensitive blending agent and of the fuel knock limits with engine cooling limits. Estimates were also made of temperature-limited engine performance at several flight and engine conditions.

Flight and Test-Stand Investigation of High-Performance Fuels in Modified Double-Row Radial Air-Cooled Engines 1: Determination of the Cooling Characteristics of the Flight Engine

Description: Report discussing the cooling characteristics of a modified 14-cylinder double-row radial air-cooled engine installed in a four-engine airplane at a pressure altitude of 7000 feet. Testing of the variable charge-air flow, variable cooling-air pressure drop, and variable fuel-air ratio was conducted. The cooling equation, temperature-limited performance, maximum engine temperatures, and other information predicted by calculations is described.
