Further Studies on the Dark Adaptation of Elementary School Children

Description: The present study is part of a long time cooperative study of the Education and Home Economics Departments of North Texas State Teachers College begun in 1940. The purpose is to compare the dark adaptations of second and third grade children made in 1940 with those made in 1941, and to determine also the dark adaptation of a group of fifth and sixth grade children receiving vitamin A concentrate.

Cindy's feller: an adaptation of Cinderella

Description: The problem with which this thesis is concerned is that of writing and directing an adaptation of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. This study is a culmination of research on children's theatre, and the writing and producing of children's plays. The research led to the writing of the first draft of Cindy's Feller, an adaptation of Cinderella, beginning with a scenario which utilized a country-western theme. Upon completion of the first draft, the play was produced at North Texas State University during the summer of 1981. Stage directions of the play, a director's log of daily rehearsals, and an evaluation of the final productions were recorded to provide a stimulus for the writing of a final draft of Cindy's Feller and the preparation of this thesis.

The use of the bio-photometer in determining the dark adaptation of pre-school age children

Description: The degree to which the normal eye can adapt to the dark is related to or dependent upon the eye's ability to regenerate visual purple. The relationship of vitamin A to the visual cycle has caused much development in improved methods of detecting vitamin A deficiency. For the most part these methods have been applied to adults and school age children. This study seeks to analyze this method as applied to pre-school age children.

Assessing the Costs of Climate Change and Adaptation in South Asia

Description: .This Asian Development Bank (ADB) study examined the economic costs associated with the impacts of climate change and the cost and benefits of adaptation in Bangladesh,Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The study aimed to (i) assess the biophysical impacts of climate change in the region, including individual country impacts, and (ii) estimate the total economic loss to the countries in the region by 2100, taking into account the different scenarios and impacts projected across vulnerable sectors, and then to estimate the magnitude of funding for adaptation measures required to avert such potential losses. Results of the study will aid development of future policies and programs for climate change adaptation in the region, including initiatives for regional cooperation and capacity building in climate change management. The study covered the following sectors: agriculture, terrestrial ecosystems, water, marine and coastal resources (except Bhutan and Nepal), health, and energy.

Dark Adaptation Studies with Adults and Children, Using the Biophotometer

Description: The present study is a part of a long-time cooperative study of the Home Economics Department of the North Texas State Teachers College, begun in 1940. The purpose is to compare the dark adaptations of second and third-grade children made in 1940 with those made of the same children in 1941 and in 1942. Also included in this study is the comparison of a group of freshmen college men made in 1940 with a group of twenty-five men made in 1942. An attempt is also made to determine whether an individual has higher dark adaptation on sunshiny days than on cloudy days.

Resilient Plant Monitoring System: Design, Analysis, and Performance Evaluation

Description: Resilient monitoring systems are sensor networks that degrade gracefully under malicious attacks on their sensors, causing them to project misleading information. The goal of this paper is to design, analyze, and evaluate the performance of a resilient monitoring system intended to monitor plant conditions (normal or anomalous). The architecture developed consists of four layers: data quality assessment, process variable assessment, plant condition assessment, and sensor network adaptation. Each of these layers is analyzed by either analytical or numerical tools, and the performance of the overall system is evaluated using simulations. The measure of resiliency of the resulting system is evaluated using Kullback Leibler divergence, and is shown to be sufficiently high in all scenarios considered.
