Green River Formation water flood demonstration project. Report for the period October 1992--March 1994

Description: The current project targeted three fluvial deltaic reservoirs in the Uinta Basin, Utah. In primary recovery, the performance of the Monument Butte unit was typical of an undersaturated reservoir whose initial pressure was close to the bubble point pressure. The unit was producing at a rate of 40 stb/day when the water flood was initiated. The unit has been producing at more than 300 stb/day for the past four years. The reservoir characteristics of Monument Butte were established in the geologic… more

Technical Approach for the Management of UMTRA Ground Water Investigation-Derived Wastes

Description: During characterization, remediation, or monitoring activities of the US Department of Energy`s (DOE) Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project, ground water samples are collected to assess the extent and amount of waterborne contamination that might have come from the mill tailings. This sampling sometimes occurs in contaminated areas where ground water quality has been degraded. Ground water sampling activities may result in field-generated wastes that must be disposed of in a man… more

Slimhole drilling for geothermal exploration

Description: Sandia National Laboratories manages the US Department of Energy program for slimhole drilling. The principal objective of this program is to expand proven geothermal reserves through increased exploration, made possible by lower-cost slimhole drilling. For this to be a valid exploration method, however, it is necessary to demonstrate that slimholes yield enough data to evaluate a geothermal reservoir, and that is the focus of Sandia`s current research. Sandia negotiated an agreement with Far W… more

Development of a near bit MWD system. Quarterly report, October--December 1993

Description: The project objective is to develop a measurements-while-drilling module that can reliably provide real-time reports of drilling conditions at the bit. The module is to support multiple types of sensors and to sample and encode their outputs in digital form under microprocessor control. The assembled message will then be electromagnetically transmitted along the drill string back to a standard mud-pulse or EM MWD tool for data integration and relay to the surface. The development effort will co… more

Implications of the presence of petroleum resources on the integrity of the WIPP

Description: The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a facility of the US Department of Energy (DOE), designed and constructed for the permanent disposal of transuranic (TRU) defense waste. The WIPP is surrounded by reserves of potash, crude oil, and natural gas. These are attractive targets for exploratory drilling which could disrupt the integrity of the transuranic waste repository. The performance assessment calculations published to date have identified future drilling for oil and gas reserves as an … more

Use of genetic algorithms and neural networks to optimize well locations and reduce well requirements

Description: A goal common to both the environmental and petroleum industries is the reduction of costs and/or enhancement of profits by the optimal placement of extraction/production and injection wells. Formal optimization techniques facilitate this goal by searching among the potentially infinite number of possible well patterns for ones that best meet engineering and economic objectives. However, if a flow and transport model or reservoir simulator is being used to evaluate the effectiveness of each net… more

Regulating toxicity in drilling mud: An innovative approach using pollution prevention

Description: Both in terms of volume and toxic pollutants, drilling muds and drill cuttings are the most significant waste streams from exploratory and development activities in the oil and gas industry. Under the Clean Water Act, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates discharges of all contaminants, including drilling muds, into the waterways and offshore areas of the United States. EPA employs technology-based effluent standards in issuing discharge permits to both onshore and offshore ope… more
