The Hanford metal wastes were divided into four categories: supernate - the liquid waste; hard sludge - dense agglomerates of poorly defined crystalline carbonates approximating the hardness of soft blackboard chalk; soft sludge - an easily slurried semi-solid consisting chiefly of needle-like phosphates; and recombined sludge - a representative sample of the solid wastes as received from Hanford, shown to be a mixture of hard and soft sludges in the ratio 2/3 by weight.
