U.S. and Russian Collaboration in the Area of Nuclear Forensics

Description: Nuclear forensics has become increasingly important in the fight against illicit trafficking in nuclear and other radioactive materials. The illicit trafficking of nuclear materials is, of course, an international problem; nuclear materials may be mined and milled in one country, manufactured in a second country, diverted at a third location, and detected at a fourth. There have been a number of articles in public policy journals in the past year that call for greater interaction between the U.… more

Osmotic Coefficients, Solubilities, and Deliquescence Relations in Mixed Aqueous Salt Solutions at Elevated Temperature

Description: While thermodynamic properties of pure aqueous electrolytes are relatively well known at ambient temperature, there are far fewer data for binary systems extending to elevated temperatures and high concentrations. There is no general theoretically sound basis for prediction of the temperature dependence of ionic activities, and consequently temperature extrapolations based on ambient temperature data and empirical equations are uncertain and require empirical verification. Thermodynamic propert… more

Remaining Sites Verification Package for 132-DR-1, 1608-DR Effluent Pumping Station, Waste Site Reclassification Form 2005-035

Description: Radiological characterization, decommissioning and demolition of the 132-DR-1 site, 1608-DR Effluent Pumping Station was performed in 1987. The current site conditions achieve the remedial action objectives and the corresponding remedial action goals established in the Remaining Sites ROD. Residual concentrations support future land uses that can be represented by a rural-residential scenario and pose no threat to groundwater or the Columbia River based on RESRAD modeling.

Enrichment Assay Methods Development for the Integrated Cylinder Verification System

Description: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors currently perform periodic inspections at uranium enrichment plants to verify UF6 cylinder enrichment declarations. Measurements are typically performed with handheld high-resolution sensors on a sampling of cylinders taken to be representative of the facility's entire product-cylinder inventory. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is developing a concept to automate the verification of enrichment plant cylinders to enable 100 percen… more

Paradigm Changes in High Temperature Plasma Physics Research and Implications for ITER

Description: Significant high temperature plasma research in both the magnetic and inertial confinement regimes led to the official launching of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project which is aimed at challenging controlled fusion power for human kind. In particular, such an endeavor originated from the fruitful research outcomes from the world wide magnetic confinement devices (primarily based on the Tokamak approach) mainly in advanced countries (US, EU, and Japan). In recent… more

ANALYSIS OF HARRELL MONOSODIUM TITANATE LOT #052511

Description: Monosodium titanate (MST) for use in the Actinide Removal Process (ARP) must be qualified and verified in advance. A single qualification sample for each batch of material is sent to SRNL for analysis, as well as a statistical sampling of verification samples. The Harrell Industries Lot No.052511 qualification and 14 verification samples met all the requirements in the specification indicating the material is acceptable for use in the process.

Extension of the Empire Code to the Resonance Region

Description: The preliminary version of a new module has been developed to be added to a nuclear reaction model code EMPIRE to allow for an evaluation of neutron cross sections in a resonance region. It automates most of the evaluation procedures and can be executed within EMPIRE or as a stand-alone program. The module includes a graphic user interface (GUI) and a number of codes and scripts that read individual, as well as average, resonance parameters from the Atlas of Neutron Resonances and other physica… more

Building Energy Information Systems: User Case Studies

Description: Measured energy performance data are essential to national efforts to improve building efficiency, as evidenced in recent benchmarking mandates, and in a growing body of work that indicates the value of permanent monitoring and energy information feedback. This paper presents case studies of energy information systems (EIS) at four enterprises and university campuses, focusing on the attained energy savings, and successes and challenges in technology use and integration. EIS are broadly defined… more

Verification and validation of fast systems with ENDF/B data.

Description: An extensive and systematic verification, validation and data testing effort using diverse Monte Carlo and deterministic methods with ENDF/B data (Versions V.2 and VI.5) is in progress. Methods verification is obtained by comparing independent methods, including continuous-energy Monte Carlo methods using the VIM and MCNP codes and 1D and 2D transport calculations using multigroup cross section sets generated with the ETOE-II/MC-2 system combined with the TWODANT code. Each of these code system… more

Parallel-Plate Electrostatic Dual Mass Oscillator

Description: A surface-micromachined two-degree-of-freedom system that was driven by parallel-plate actuation at antiresonance was demonstrated. The system consisted of an absorbing mass connected by folded springs to a drive mass. The system demonstrated substantial motion amplification at antiresonance. The absorber mass amplitudes were 0.8-0.85 pm at atmospheric pressure while the drive mass amplitudes were below 0.1 pm. Larger absorber mass amplitudes were not possible because of spring softening in the… more

The effects of 450 kg surface explosions at the E layer of the ionosphere. Los Alamos Source Region Project

Description: A network of hf ionospheric sounders consisting of two transmitter and two receiver stations was deployed to detect the effects of acoustic waves generated by surface ground motion following an underground nuclear test (UGT) at the Nevada Test Site. The frequency of the transmissions were chosen so that the hf radio waves were totally reflected in the E layer of the ionosphere at an altitude of approximately 100 km. The transmissions were highly stable cw tones at two frequencies separated by 1… more
