Physics calculations for mixed PuO{sub 2}-UO{sub 2} NPR loadings

Description: At the request of NRD (NPR Physics Subsection) a study was initiated to determine the physics characteristics of various plutonium-uranium composites as fuel for the NPR. From this study, the PuO{sub 2}-UO{sub 2} fuel system was selected to receive major attention. The effect of adding a burnable poison, B-10, in intimate contact with the mixed oxide fuel was also is to be considered. The present report summarizes the results of these investigations.

Production test IP-734, HAPO 309: High core temperature capsules in the KW Snout facility, Series 2

Description: The objective of the production test detailed in this report is to continue a program started under Production Test IP-690; the major change is an increase in sample enrichment. The higher enrichment is required to increase the portion of the fuel element core which is molten. This test will provide data to correlate maximum fuel temperature with post-irradiation microstructure, and data that are required to study the kinetics of fuel redistribution during the time interval between insertion of… more

Progress report on NASA cermet studies identification SNC-12, January 1964

Description: This report details progress in an intensive investigation which was launched to determine the basic mechanisms leading to gross loss of UO{sub 2} fuel upon thermal cycling of UO{sub 2}-W cermets and to suggest means of overcoming this serious operational problem. (This problem was recently uncovered at both Lewis Research Center and at Hanford). More than 40 separate experiments were conducted in four high temperature furnaces, at temperatures to 2600 C, pressures from 10{sup {minus}5} mm vacu… more

Production Test IP-653-D: Irradiation service request HAPO 300, irradiation of a tungsten matrix UO{sub 2} cermet plate in the KW snout facility

Description: Cemets are attractive as fuel for nuclear reactors because of their relatively high thermal conductivity and their apparent ability to withstand very high temperatures for prolonged periods of time. A number of cermet fuel specimens have been successfully irradiated at temperatures greater than 2000 C for periods of up to six weeks. Two cermet fuel plates described herein have successfully operated, in the snout facility, at {approximately}3000 C for four hours each. This continuation of the pr… more

Fabrication of Tungsten-UO 2 Hexagonal-Celled Fuel-Element Configurations

Description: The gas-pressure-bonding process is being evaluated as a means of fabricating tungsten-UO 2 hexagonal-celled fuel geometries. A two-part study was initiated to optimize the fuel materials and to develp the required fixturing and loading techniques. Production of fueled tungsten-coated UO 2 particles in in progress so that geometries embodying coated particles or coated particles plus fine tungsten powder can be evaluated. Tests to data have shown the rquirement for a pretreatment in which a gas… more

Status of the SNAP-50 reactor fuels parametric studies. Part I

Description: Declassified 6 Sep 1973. Results of the parametric study are given for both present and advanced capability (2 and 8 MW). Fuels which result in minimum reactor weights are UC/UN (95% dense), UC/UN--1W for the 2 MW design, UC/ UN-1W for 8 MW. Effects of fuel clad and fuel maximum temperature on the reactor weight were also studied. Recommendations are made for the 2-MW SNAP-50/ SPUR fuel element development and reactor design program, and for additional parametric studies. (DLC)
