An Over-moded Fundamental Power Coupler for the ILC

Description: The current design of fundamental power couplers for the ILC are expensive and require excessively long conditioning times. The goal of this develoment is design of a coupler that requires little rf processing and is significantly less expensive to build than the present ILC coupler.      The goal of this program is development of a new technology for power couplers. This new technology is based on the cylindrical TE01 mode and other over-moded technologies developed for the X-band rf distributi… more

Bubble Size Control to Improve Oxygen-Based Bleaching: Characterization of Flow Regimes in Pulp-Water-Gas Three-Phase Flows

Description: Flow characteristics of fibrous paper pulp-water-air slurries were investigated in a vertical circular column 1.8 m long, with 5.08 cm diameter. Flow structures, gas holdup (void fraction), and the geometric and population characteristics of gas bubbles were experimentally investigated, using visual observation, Gamma-ray densitometry, and flash X-ray photography. Five distinct flow regimes could be visually identified: dispersed bubbly, layered bubbly, plug, churn-turbulent, and slug. Flow reg… more

SH-SAW Sensor Platform for Chemical Detection in Aqueous Solutions

Description: Chemically sensitive polymers coated on delay lines utilizing shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensors are investigated for the detection of organic analytes in liquid environments. The SH-SAW sensor platform was designed and fabricated on 36{degree} rotated Y-cut LiTaO{sub 3}. By depositing a SiO{sub 2} dielectric layer over the entire device prior to applying the polymer film, partial electrical passivation of the interdigital transducers (IDT) is obtained while increasing the … more

Pressure fluctuations as a diagnostic tool for fluidized beds. Technical progress report, January 1, 1996--March 31, 1996

Description: Additional pressure fluctuation data was recorded from the ISU power plants two CFB boilers. Absolute pressure fluctuations were measured immediately above the distributor nozzles and near the top of the CFB boilers. The fluctuations measured near the bottom of the bed exhibit a highly oscillatory (0.25-0.3 Hz) phenomena. This {open_quotes}square wave{close_quotes} pressure signal is observed at all times of the day and under different boiler loadings. Steps were taken to insure that abasing wa… more
