LOFT differential pressure uncertainty analysis

Description: A performance analysis of the LOFT differential pressure (..delta..P) measurement is presented. Along with completed descriptions of test programs and theoretical studies that have been conducted on the ..delta..P, specific sources of measurement uncertainty are identified, quantified, and combined to provide an assessment of the ability of this measurement to satisfy the SDD 1.4.1C (June 1975) requirement of measurement of differential pressure.

Feasibility investigation and design study of optical well logging methods for high temperature geothermal wells

Description: The objective of this project was exploration of a novel approach to high temperature well logging, based on a system of optical transducers and an optical transmission line both theoretically capable of operation to at least 600/sup 0/C. The scope of the work involved the accomplishment of ten specific tasks. These had as their objective the determination of feasibility, and identification of major problem areas, in the implementation of continuous temperature logging of geothermal wells using… more

Separation of Yeast Cells from MS2 Viruses Using Acoustic Radiation Force

Description: We report a rapid and robust separation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and MS2 bacteriophage using acoustic focusing in a microfluidic device. A piezoelectric transducer (PZT) generates acoustic standing waves in the microchannel. These standing waves induce acoustic radiation force fields that direct microparticles towards the nodes (i.e., pressure minima) or the anti-nodes (i.e., pressure maxima) of the standing waves depending on the relative compressidensity between the particle and the suspen… more

Investigation of factors affecting the calibration of strain gage based transducers ( Goodzeit gages'') for SSC magnets

Description: These transducers are designed to measure stresses on SSC collared coils. They are individually calibrated with a bonded ten-stack of SSC inner coil cable by applying a known load and reading corresponding output from the gages. The transducer is supported by a notched backing plate'' that allows for bending of the gage beam during calibration or in use with an actual coil. Several factors affecting the calibration and use of the transducers are: the number of times a backing plate'' is used, t… more

Transrex 500 kW power supply transductor upgrades

Description: This paper describes various upgrades and tests done at the Research Division 500 kW Transrex power supply dc current transductors and chassis. The results of all modifications were measured on the same test setup with the same transductor head and chassis. Field testing of over one-hundred power supplies indicated that the results given in this paper are similar to the signals observed in the field within a factor of + or {minus} two. The dc transductors yield 10Vdc burden resistor voltage at … more

Self-Propelled in-Tube Shuttle and Control System for Automated Measurements of Magnetic Field Alignment

Description: A magnetic field alignment gauge is used to measure the field angle as a function of axial position in each of the magnets for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). Present measurements are made by manually pushing the through the magnet bore tube and stopping at intervals to record field measurements. Gauge location is controlled through graduation marks and alignment pins on the push rods. Field measurements are recorded on a logging multimeter with tape output. Described is a computerize… more

RHIC stochastic cooling motion control

Description: Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) beams are subject to Intra-Beam Scattering (IBS) that causes an emittance growth in all three-phase space planes. The only way to increase integrated luminosity is to counteract IBS with cooling during RHIC stores. A stochastic cooling system for this purpose has been developed, it includes moveable pick-ups and kickers in the collider that require precise motion control mechanics, drives and controllers. Since these moving parts can limit the beam path ap… more

Passive Acoustic Detection of Wind Turbine In-Flow Conditions for Active Control and Optimization

Description: Wind is a significant source of energy; however, the human capability to produce electrical energy still has many hurdles to overcome. One of these is the unpredictability of the winds in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The ABL is highly turbulent in both stable and unstable conditions (based on the vertical temperature profile) and the resulting fluctuations can have a dramatic impact on wind turbine operation. Any method by which these fluctuations could be observed, estimated, or predi… more

Chief Joseph Kokanee Enhancement Project; Strobe Light Deterrent Efficacy Test and Fish Behavior Determination at Grand Coulee Dam Third Powerplant Forebay, 2005-2006 Annual Report.

Description: The construction of Grand Coulee and Chief Joseph dams on the Columbia River resulted in the complete extirpation of the anadromous fishery upstream of these structures. Today, this area is totally dependent upon resident fish resources to support local fisheries. The resident fishing is enhanced by an extensive stocking program for target species in the existing fishery, including kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerka kennerlyi) and rainbow trout (O. mykiss). The kokanee fishery in Lake Roosevelt has no… more

An Overview of Acoustic Telemetry

Description: Acoustic telemetry has been a dream of the drilling industry for the past 50 years. It offers the promise of data rates which are one-hundred times greater than existing technology. Such a system would open the door to true logging-while-drilling technology and bring enormous profits to its developers. The oil and gas industry has led in most of the attempts to develop this type of telemetry system; however, very substantial efforts have also been made through government sponsored work in the g… more

Occurrence of perched saturation and interflow over an argillic horizon in a low relief hillslope.

Description: Abstract. Many of the soils in the south-eastern US are characterized by an argillic, or clay horizon, that largely parallels the soil surface at depths ranging from a few centimeters to 100 cen-timeters. The degree to which these argillic horizons alter subsurface movement of infiltrated water is not well known. Interflow, or throughflow, is shallow lateral subsurface flow that moves over a horizon that restricts percolation. This research investigates how often and under what conditions a rel… more

A Flexural Mode Tuning Technique for Membraned Boiler Tubing

Description: Corrosion of tubing used in black-liquor recovery boilers is a major concern in all pulp and paper mills. Extensive corrosion in recovery boiler tubes can result in a significant safety and environmental hazard. Considerable plant resources are expended to inspect recovery boiler tubing. Currently, visual and ultrasonic inspections are primarily used during the annual maintenance shutdown to monitor corrosion rates and cracking of tubing. This project is developing guided acoustic waves for use… more

A new mechanical characterization method for microactuators applied to shape memory films

Description: We present a new technique for the mechanical characterization of microactuators and apply it to shape memory alloy (SMA) thin films. A test instrument was designed which utilizes a spring-loaded transducer to measure displacements with resolution of 1.5 mm and forces with resolution of 0.2 mN. Employing an out- of-plane loading method for SMA thin films, strain resolution of 30 me and stress resolution of 2.5 MPa were achieved. Four mm long, 2 {micro}m thick NiTiCu ligaments suspended across o… more
