Polarizability of the low frequency excitations in disordered solids. [Polymethylmethacrylate]

Description: An attempt to find manifestations of an electric dipole moment associated with the low-temperature thermal properties of glasses has enabled the setting of very low limits for GeO/sub 2/ and PMMA, 0.06 and 0.16 Debye respectively. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electric field dependence of the thermal conductivity of SiO/sub 2/ in conjunction with dielectric measurements by Schickfus et al. has pinned down some of the features of a tunneling system… more

Further evidence for the T/sup -/1/2 singularity in amorphous Kondo alloys. [Ni-Pd-P alloys containing up to 7 at. percent Mn]

Description: A T/sup -1/2/ variation of resistivity with temperature near T = 0 is found in rapidly quenched amorphous Ni--Pd--P alloys containing up to at.percent Mn, providing further evidence for the existence of this new singularity. It is argued that the new resistivity term arises from interference between multiple scattering of conduction electrons by atoms in magnetic and nonmagnetic states and is observed as a consequence of a short electron mean free path and breakdown of conservation of electron … more

Temperature dependence of the fir absorption spectrum in amorphous dielectrics. [GeO/sub 2/ PMMA, vitreous SiO/sub 2/ with and without 600 ppM H/sub 2/O]

Description: A study of the temperature dependence of the absorption coefficient in amorphous dielectrics below 10 cm/sup -1/ enabled the identification of energy level configurations from thermal population changes. It was found that the anomalous low frequency modes in glasses are comprised of widely spaced manifolds of energy levels.

Aging studies of LX-14. Period covered: October--December 1975

Description: A long-term compatibility study (2 y) of LX-14 at ambient temperature and at 50, 60, and 80/sup 0/C has been initiated and has been partially completed. Analysis of aged LX-14 samples, performed by gel permeation chromatography showed that the Estane degraded. Previous data on the compositional analysis of LX-14 using 1,2-dichloroethane were found to be unreliable and a new method of analysis is being investigated.

Effect of alloying elements in steels on the kinetics of the austenite to bainite transformation

Description: The effects of different alloying elements on the bainite reaction kinetics in steel were investigated. Dilatometric studies were performed on four Fe--C--X ternary systems in particular (X = Mo, Ni, Cr, Mn). The investigation was extended to include higher combination systems of these same alloying elements such as Fe--C--Mo--Ni, Fe--C--Ni--Cr, and Fe--C--Ni--Cr--Mo in order to determine what their interaction effects are in the bainite transformation. All the alloying elements studied acceler… more

First and second pressure derivatives of the elastic constants of CsBr crystals. [222 to 330/sup 0/K; phonon dispersion relation]

Description: The first and second pressure derivatives of the adiabatic elastic constants of CsBr single crystal were measured at 300, 298, 258.2, and 222/sup 0/K using pulse interference techniques. The corresponding quantities of the bulk modulus of CsBr are also calculated. The maximum pressures used in the experiments ranged from 6 kbars to 11 kbars. B/sub 0//sup T'/ is measured to an accuracy of approximately 5 percent, and B/sub 0//sup S''/ to approximately 15 to 30 percent, assuming the systematic er… more

Decomposition of HNS in DMF. Progress report, July--September 1975

Description: Progress during July to October 1975 in research on chemical explosives is reported. Three batches of HNS containing various amounts of DPE and TNB were heated in DMF for seven hours at 100, 120 and 148/sup 0/C. Samples were withdrawn periodically and the relative percentages of the three constituents were determined by liquid chromatography. At 100 and 120/sup 0/C the relative percentage of HNS increased with time while the others diminished. At 148/sup 0/C the opposite was observed. An additi… more

Description of hardening curves of fcc single- and polycrystals

Description: Stress-strain curves are analyzed over their entire strain region and over a wide range of temperatures to arrive at a general analytic description of work-hardening curves. The data were obtained with fcc single and polycrystals, but there is experimental and theoretical evidence that the principles of the analysis are also applicable for other crystal structures and even for more complex technical materials. 9 figs, 1 table, 46 refs.
