Tradeoff Analysis for Combat Service Support Wireless Communications Alternatives

Description: As the Army moves toward more mobile and agile forces and continued sustainment of numerous high-cost legacy logistics management systems, the requirement for wireless connectivity and a wireless network to supporting organizations has become ever more critical. There are currently several Army communications initiatives underway to resolve this wireless connectivity issue. However, to fully appreciate and understand the value of these initiatives, a Tradeoff Analysis is needed. The present stu… more

A Quantum Leap : Innovation in the Evolving Digital Library

Description: It is an honor to give the Lazerow lecture tonight and to discuss digital library developments from the perspective of working at a national laboratory. Tonight I would like to consider what lies ahead given the evolution in scientific research, how that impacts the development of digital libraries, and finally, look at some of the challenges ahead of us. I'm particularly interested in giving this talk tonight because it provides an opportunity to talk to those of you who are students. You repr… more

Recent progress on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX)

Description: Recent upgrades to the NSTX facility have led to improved plasma performance. Using 5MW of neutral beam injection, plasmas with toroidal {beta}{sub T} (= 2{mu}{sub 0}<p>/B{sub T}{sup 2} where B{sub T} is the vacuum toroidal field at the plasma geometric center) > 30% have been achieved with normalized {beta}{sub N} (={beta}{sub T}aB{sub I}/I{sub p}) {approx} 6% {center_dot} m {center_dot} T/MA. The highest {beta} discharge exceeded the calculated no-wall {beta} limit for several wall t… more

Hybrid electric vehicle technology assessment : methodology, analytical issues, and interim results.

Description: This report presents the results of the first phase of Argonne National Laboratory's (ANL's) examination of the costs and energy impacts of light-duty hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). We call this research an HEV Technology Assessment, or HEVTA. HEVs are vehicles with drivetrains that combine electric drive components (electric motor, electricity storage) with a refuelable power plant (e.g., an internal combustion engine). The use of hybrid drivetrains is widely considered a key technology stra… more

Computationally mediated microscopy/microanalysis : the next frontier.

Description: Over the last three decades, microscopists and microanalysts have successfully developed, documented and exploited a large number of experimental techniques for the characterization of the morphology, crystallography, elemental, chemical and electronic structure of their samples. While the application of any of these now ''routine'' tools of microcharacterization remains the foundation of the work reported in the microscopy or microanalysis literature, it can be safely asserted that the technol… more

RHIC STATUS AND PLANS.

Description: RHIC ended successfully its second year of operation in January 2002 after a six month run with gold ions and two months of polarized proton collisions. I will review the machine performance and accomplishments, that include reaching design energy (100 GeV/u) and design luminosity during the gold run, and the first high energy (100 GeV) polarized proton collisions. I will also discuss the machine development strategy and the main performance milestones. The goals and plans for the shutdown and … more
