Conceptual design of a laser fusion power plant

Description: A conceptual design of a laser fusion power plant is extensively discussed. Recent advances in high gain targets are exploited in the design. A smaller blanket structure is made possible by use of a thick falling region of liquid lithium for a first wall. Major design features of the plant, reactor, and laser systems are described. Multifragmentation in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions

Description: The GSL/LBL plastic ball/wall detector system was used to gain insight into the fragment production mechanism in Au + Au and Au + Fe reactions. Capture cross section and gamma-ray spectrum calculations for medium-weight nuclei. [Double-peak, energy-dependent Breit-Wigner model]

Description: A double-peak, energy-dependent Breit-Wigner model of the E1 gamma-ray strength function was applied to nuclei from As to Rh, to predict their neutron capture cross sections and capture gamma-ray spectra. A consistent set of model parameters was obtained in this mass region to describe the step in the low-energy tail of the E1 strength function. Structural Genomics of Minimal Organisms: Pipeline and Results

Description: The initial objective of the Berkeley Structural Genomics Center was to obtain a near complete three-dimensional (3D) structural information of all soluble proteins of two minimal organisms, closely related pathogens Mycoplasma genitalium and M. pneumoniae. Metal-containing plasma-polymerized coatings for laser-fusion targets

Description: Addition of metal to plastic layers in some direct drive laser fusion targets is needed to reduce electron induced fuel preheat. Shielding a Streak Camera from Hard X-rays

Description: The targets used in the Hot Halfraum Campaign at OMEGA create many hot electrons, which result in a large flux of hard x-rays. The hard x-rays produce a high background in the streak camera. The background was significantly reduced by wrapping the streak camera with a high-Z material; in this case, 1/8' of Pb. The large hard x-ray flux also adds noise to images from framing cameras which use CCDs.
