Formation of Pillars at the Boundaries between HII Regions and Molecular Clouds

Description: We investigate numerically the hydrodynamic instability of an ionization front (IF) accelerating into a molecular cloud, with imposed initial perturbations of different amplitudes. When the initial amplitude is small, the imposed perturbation is completely stabilized and does not grow. When the initial perturbation amplitude is large enough, roughly the ratio of the initial amplitude to wavelength is greater than 0.02, portions of the IF temporarily separate from the molecular cloud surface, lo… more

Gyroelastic fluids

Description: A study is made of a scale model in three dimensions of a guiding center plasma within the purview of gyroelastic (also known as finite gyroradius-near theta pinch) magnetohydrodynamics. The (nonlinear) system sustains a particular symmetry called isorrhopy which permits the decoupling of fluid modes from drift modes. Isorrhopic equilibria are analyzed within the framework of geometrical optics resulting in (local) dispersion relations and ray constants. A general scheme is developed to evolve … more

Nonlinear saturation of the trapped-ion mode by mode coupling in two dimensions

Description: A study of the nonlinear saturation by mode coupling of the dissipative trapped-ion mode is presented in which both radial and poloidal variations are considered. The saturation mechanism consists of the nonlinear coupling via E x B convection of energy from linearly unstable modes to stable modes. Stabilization is provided at short poloidal wavelengths by Landau damping from trapped and circulating ions, at short radial wavelengths by effects associated with the finite ion banana excursions an… more

Numerical Calculations Demonstrating Complete Stabilization of the Ideal Magnetohydrodynamic Resistive Wall Mode by Longitudinal Flow

Description: The cylindrical ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability problem, including ow and a resistive wall, is cast in the standard mathematical form, ωA⋅x = B⋅x, without discretizing the vacuum regions surrounding the plasma. This is accomplished by means of a finite element expansion for the plasma perturbations, by coupling the plasma surface perturbations to the resistive wall using a Green's function approach, and by expanding the unknown vector, x, to include the perturbed current in the resist… more

Bacterial Biotransformations for the In situ Stabilization of Plutonium

Description: Plutonium contamination in the environment is generally low-level and may be present and transported in a range of forms (IV, V, VI). Current remediation strategies are costly, financially and in terms of increased exposure risk to people and the environment. In situ bacterial biostabilization is a promising alternative.

MHD-Stabilization of Axisymmetric Mirror Systems Using Pulsed ECRH

Description: This paper, part of a continuing study of means for the stabilization of MHD interchange modes in axisymmertric mirror-based plasma confinement systems, is aimed at a preliminary look at a technique that would employ a train of plasma pressure pulses produced by ECRH to accomplish the stabilization. The purpose of using sequentially pulsed ECRH rather than continuous-wave ECRH is to facilitate the localization of the heated-electron plasma pulses in regions of the magnetic field with a strong p… more

Enhanced Magnetism in Epitaxial SrRuO3 Thin Films

Description: We have observed enhanced magnetization in epitaxial SrRuO{sub 3} thin films compared to previously reported bulk and thin film values of 1.1-1.6 {mu}{sub B}/Ru ion. The degree of enhancement is strongly dependent on the lattice distortions imposed on the SrRuO{sub 3} films by SrTiO{sub 3}, (LaAlO{sub 3}){sub 0.3}(SrTaO{sub 3}){sub 0.7} (LSAT), and LaAlO{sub 3} substrates. A larger enhancement of magnetization for coherently strained SrRuO{sub 3} films on SrTiO{sub 3} and LSAT compared to fully… more

Novel interferometer spectrometer for sensitive stellar radial velocimetry

Description: We describe a new kind of stellar radial velocimeter based on the series combination of a wide angle Michelson interferometer and a disperser, and which we call a fringing spectrometer. The simplest instrument response of the interferometer produces smaller instrumental noise, and the low resolution requirements of the disperser allows high efficiency and creates an etendue capability which is two orders of magnitude larger than current radial velocimeters. The instrument is compact, inexpensiv… more

Evaluation of Need and Location for a Thermogravimetric Analyzer in the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) Materials Stabilization

Description: This plan provides an analysis for locating a TGA to support PFP Thermal Stabilization processes. The scope of this document is to evaluate the need for, and location for, installation of a TGA system as a supplement to the SFE equipment for moisture measurement in pure oxides. A location assessment for the SFE equipment was previously performed (HNF 1999). Based on that assessment, co-location of the TGA system with the SFE system is the preferred option. This would enable thermally stabilized… more

Nonlinear Dynamics of Ionization Fronts in HII Regions

Description: Hydrodynamic instability of an accelerating ionization front (IF) is investigated with 2D hydrodynamic simulations, including absorption of incident photoionizing photons, recombination in the HII region, and radiative molecular cooling. When the amplitude of the perturbation is large enough, nonlinear dynamics of the IF triggered by the separation of the IF from the cloud surface is observed. This causes the second harmonic of the imposed perturbation to appear on the cloud surfaces, whereas t… more
