People and Decisions: Meeting the Information Needs of Managers

Description: The information needs of managers with respect to avian species at the SRS are identified. The process by which information is integrated into decision making are discussed. Numerous studies of upland bird species at SRS were conducted as part of the DOE Biodiversity Program. This information is being incorporated into biological assessments and plan through modeling and geographic information systems.

A comprehensive landscape approach for monitoring bats on the Nevada Test Site in south-central Nevada

Description: The Nevada Test Site (NTS) is located in south-central Nevada and encompasses approximately 3,497 square kilometers (1,350 square miles). It straddles both the Mojave and Great Basin Deserts and includes a distinct transition region between these two deserts. Because of its geographical location, a great level of vegetative and physiographic diversity exists on the NTS. Also, numerous mines and tunnels are found on the NTS which are potential roost sites for bats. Multiple technqiues are being … more

Reclamation of disturbed arid lands maximizing effectiveness to ensure mission sustainability

Description: Much of US Department of Defense training and testing areas is on arid and semiarid land. Testing and training activities are often more devastating to arid lands than more mesic areas, and consequently, can threaten the continuation of military testing and training operations in these areas. Under current technology, it is estimated that up to 35% of revegetation projects in arid areas will fail. Current gaps exist in distinguishing among various degrees of sustainable and nonsustainable impac… more

Bioethanol: Moving into the Marketplace

Description: In the last 10 years advances in biotechnology have reduced the cost of bioethanol by almost 25%. The DOE bioethanol program targets process improvements intended to allow bioethanol to compete with gasoline in the marketplace. Researchers are utilizing biomass feedstock for bioethanol conversion. The bioethanol conversion technology depends on hydrolysis and fermentation. To maximize biomass fermentation, biotechnology researchers have produced new strains of yeast and bacteria.

Microbially Induced Iron Oxidation: What, Where, How

Description: From the results of the different bacterial cells seen, it is fairly certain that Gallionella is present because of the bean-shaped cells and twisted stalks found with the TEM. The authors cannot confirm, though, what other iron-oxidizing genera exist in the tubes, since the media was only preferential and not one that isolated a specific genus of bacteria. Based on the environment in which they live and the source of the water, they believe their cultures contain Gallionella, Leptothrix, and p… more
