Successful Track Record with Diverse Policies (Fact Sheet)

Description: The Clean Energy Solutions Center helps governments, advisors, and analysts create policies and programs that advance the deployment of clean energy technologies. Through its no-cost offerings, the Solutions Center enables countries to learn from and share policy best practices, data, and analysis tools, creating an international dialogue on clean energy policies that raises global awareness of emerging policy issues and innovations. As part of these efforts, the Solutions Center provides an in… more

Anion Exchange Recovery of Plutonium From Reduction Residues

Description: An anion exchange process was demonstrated for the recovery of Pu from waste produced in the reduction of Pu salts to the metal. Pu in a highiy salted 6M nitric acid solution, derived from the dissolution of slag and crucible waste, was separated from impurities by absorbing the Pu(IV) nitrate complex on the anion exchange resin and subsequentiy eluting with dilute nitric acid. A flowsheet for plant operation is presented. (auth)

Two-Liquid-Phase Temperature Limits for the Homogeneous Reactor Fuel Solution and Its Concentrates: Comments on Solid-Liquid Equilibria

Description: Temperatures are given at which two liquid phases form in a synthetic homogeneous reactor fuel solution and its concentrates. The data show a two- liquid-phase boundary temperature of 332 deg C for the particular HRT fuel composition and a flat minimum temperature of 305 deg C for the initial solution concentrated between 6 and 16 times. Experiments on solid-liquid equilibria between 300 and 329 deg C are presented to indicatc sclution stability in this temperature region. Some related comments… more

Experimental Determination of Thermodynamic Properties of Ion-Exchange in Heulandite: Binary Ion-Exchange Experiments at 55 and 85 oC Involving Ca2+, Sr2+, Na+, and K+

Description: Heulandite is a common rock-forming zeolite that exhibits wide solid solution of extra framework cations, presumably due to ready ion exchange with aqueous solutions. In order to provide a quantitative basis for interpreting and predicting the distribution of aqueous species between heulandite and aqueous solutions, ion exchange equilibrium between heulandite and aqueous solutions with respect to the binary cation pairs Ca{sup 2+} - K{sup +}, Ca{sup 2+} - Na{sup +}, K{sup +} - Na{sup +}, K{sup … more

URANIUM RECOVERY FROM LAPRE-II FUEL SOLUTION BY TBP EXTRACTION

Description: A feed preparation and solvent extraction flowsheet was developed for the recovery and decontamination of highly enriched uranium from the LAPRE-II reactor fuel solution. The fuel solution, U(IV) in concentrated H/sub 3/PO/sup 4/ ' was dilutad, Fe(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ added to complex phosphate and supply salting strength, NaNO/sub 2/ added to oxidize U(IV) to U(VI) so that U may be extracted efficiently with 6% TBP. The flowsheet is designed for operation in noncritically safe equipment. (auth)

Simultaneously Bound Guests and Chiral Recognition: A Chiral Self-Assembled Supramolecular Host Encapsulates Hydrophobic Guests

Description: Driven by the hydrophobic effect, a water-soluble, chiral, self-assembled supramolecular host is able to encapsulate hydrophobic organic guests in aqueous solution. Small aromatics can be encapsulated in the supramolecular assembly, and the simultaneous encapsulation of multiple guests is observed in many cases. The molecular host assembly is able to recognize different substitutional isomers of disubstituted benzenes with ortho substitution leading to the encapsulation of two guests, but meta … more

Problem Proposed for the American Mathematical Monthly

Description: The problem is to define: P(x) := {Sigma}{sub k = 1}{sup {infinity}} arctan (x - 1/(k + x + 1) {radical}(k + 1) + (k + 2) {radical}(k + x)). (1) (a) Find explicit, finite-expression evaluations of P(n) for all integers n {ge} 0. (b) Show {tau} := lim{sub x {yields} -1{sup +}} P(x) exists, and find an explicit evaluation for {tau}. (c) Are there a more general closed forms for P, say at half-integers? Solution with the abbreviations: r := {radical} (k + 1), s := {radical} (k + x) the argument of… more

Separation of Tuballoy From Gunk Solutions by Sulfite Precipitation

Description: Summary: A method is presented for the precipitation of tuballoy, apparently as a tubanyl ammonium sulfite, from gunk solutions containing the contaminants encountered in the recovery cycle. The impurities are not precipitated under the conditions employed, and their amounts in the product are reduced to values which can be attributed to occlusion. The recovery of tuballoy on one precipitation ranges from 99.5% to 99.9%.

Alternating Current and Square-Wave Polarography

Description: A exploratory study was made of a polarographic technique in which an alternating sine or square-wave potential is superimposed upon the applied d.c. potential of the polarographic scan. Recording of the a.c. component of the polarographic current results in derivative-type waves. It was shown that the technique yields greater sensitivity and greater selectivity than normal polarographic technique.
