Hazards Control Quarterly Report No. 13, April-June 1963

Description: A plot of radioiodines produced by thermal fission of U/sup 235/ as a function of time after fission is presented, and a high-expansion fire control system for glove boxes using argon-- aqueous ammonium lauryl sulfate foams is described. In development of analytical and measuring methods, an infrared spectrophotometric analysis of vapors in calibration bottles is reported along with modification of the Davis halide meter for continuous atmospheric monitoring of methyl chloroform and development… more

Measurement of the Intensity of the Proton Beam of the Harvard University Synchrocyclotron for Energy-Spectral Measurements of Nuclear Secondaries

Description: Two thin helium-filled parallel-plate ionization chambers were designed for use in continuously monitoring the 160-Mev proton beam of the Harvard University Synchrocyclotron over an intensity range from 10/sup 5/ to 10/sup 10/ protons/ sec. The ionlzation chambers were calibrated by two independert methods. In four calibrations the charge collected in the ionization chambers was compared with that deposited in a Faraday cup which followed the ionization chambers in the proton beam. In a second … more

OPERATION OF THE SODIUM TECHNOLOGY LOOP FOR CONTAMINATION METER EVALUATIONS

Description: The Blake Rhometer operating range was extended from 600 to 1000 deg F and a variable-orifice plugging meter was developed. Both instruments were evaluated in the Atomic Power Development Associates Scdium Technology Loop against weighed or metered contaminants. The loop injection series included: water, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and methane gases; and tea bag injections of sodium carbonate, sodium hydride, sodium hydroxide, and sodium monoxide. Cover gas was monitored and temp… more

HIGH-TEMPERATURE MATERIALS AND REACTOR COMPONENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. VOLUME III. INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROLS. Third Annual Report

Description: The development of instruments for controlling reactor operation is reported. A shim-scram actuator was designed incorporating an electromagnetic dnlve for shim and scram, a shim speed limiting device, and a force feedback position indicator. A three-channel trip circuit and a two-out-of-three logic circuit using controlled switches in place of transistors was designed, built, and tested. A capacitance-type temperature sensor was operated in an inert atmosphere at temperatures up to 3782 deg F.… more

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF EDDY-CURRENT COOLANT-CHANNEL SPACING-PROBES

Description: The coolant-channel spacing between two flat fuel plates may be measured using an eddy-current induction coil. The range and sensitivity of these spacing measurements are functions of the coil geometry, the material surrounding the coil, and the operating frequency. Experimental curves are given showing how the coil impedance varies as a function of geometry, frequency, and the material surrounding the coil. A design problem is solved showing the compromises made between range and sensitivity w… more

Fulminant properties of high explosives equation of state studies. Quarterly report, January--March 1964

Description: This project consists of (1) essentially routine experimentation, including evaluation of detonation velocity, gap sensitivity testing, and drop weight-impact machine testing; and (2) an experimental program whose goal is the development of high precision one and two-dimensional hydrodynamic data for use in establishing empirical detonation product equations of state.
