Unusual incident at Savannah River

Description: On January 12, 1953, an explosion occurred in the Savannah River pilot plant which has been used since November, 1951 by du Pont personnel to train operators and to test equipment for their new Purex production plant. The explosion occurred in an evaporator in which a uranyl nitrate solution containing some organics was being concentrated to a high degree to remove nitric acid. This memorandum reviews the facts surrounding the incident as obtained from the official Preliminary Technical Report'… more

Personnel requirements

Description: The hiring schedule was reviewed by the same method that was used in the reference letter with essentially the same results; that is, that we should hire approximately 125 technical graduates during the hiring year 1953-54. In the belief that possibly this method was a bit too crude for this stage of the Plant development, I have applied another one, which I believe is fairly independent of the previous method of calculation since it is directed at a consideration of only people required who ha… more

Flat plate bonded fuel elements: Report number 2, 11 August--10 October 1953

Description: Attention has continued to be concentrated on routes employing either wrought uranium or powder metallurgy product for the making of flat plate fuel elements of approximately 0.180-inch uranium metal core thickness bonded to either ribbed or ribless aluminum sheaths. Intermediate goals of the program are to have elements 18 inches long for MTR irradiation tests this fall and to make sufficient advance in the overall program in 1954 so that an initial reactor charge of 15-foot long fuels can be … more

Travel to Battelle Memorial Institute. Trip report, September 17, 24, and October 8, 1953

Description: This report gives a brief summary of work at Battelle in support of Savannah River reactor fuel elements. Barrier effectiveness tests show that 0.2 mil nickel is a minimum for diffusion barrier application. Successful bonds by roll cladding with an electrodeposited nickel bond layer have been produced without deformation of 1 inch x 1 inch x 0.180 inch cores. Deformation of core versus pack has been established for several conditions of core dimension and rolling schedule. Apparatus for a criti… more

Incidents that require emergency operating procedures

Description: All foreseeable emergencies are adequately forestalled by installing in the reactor areas of the Savannah River Plant a number of pieces of auxiliary equipment. This precaution is taken in order to prevent permanent damage to the main equipment and to contain the radioactive material in the restricted areas of the plant. However, in the unlikely event of failure of some pieces of the main and/or auxiliary equipment, it is necessary that the operators take coordinated emergency action in order t… more

Performance of the Disassembly Equipment : NYX Test No. 2.9.1, 2.9.3

Description: Abstract: "The NYX testing of the component disassembly equipment comprised repeated operation of both the quatrefoil disassembly machine and the foil press and shear to evaluate the suitability of these machines to perform their design function with reliability and convenience of operation. During testing, both design and operational deficiencies were found and corrected in the NYX equipment. In general, both machines operated satisfactorily after modification."
