Energies of organic compounds. Technical progress report. [Ketals, orthoesters, norbonyl ketals]

Description: Two automated reaction calorimetry systems were built and tested. The first made use of a quartz thermometer probe as the temperature measuring element. The second was constructed using a thermister which was part of a Wheatstone bridge. The off-balance voltage from the bridge was measured using the 6 1/2 digit digital voltmeter, and transferred to the microprocessor. The one disadvantage of the first system is the relatively large size of the quartz sensor. The calorimeter systems were used to… more

Investigation of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability

Description: The present research program is centered on the experimental and numerical study of the hydrodynamics of shock-accelerated spherical density inhomogeneities. These flows are part of a broader category of shock-induced mixing flows that play a critical role in the implosion of D-T pellets in laser-driven ICF experiments. For the past year, our work has consisted of both experimental and numerical activities which were presented at two conferences and resulted in the publication of one journal ar… more

High Energy Density Science at the Linac Coherent Light Source

Description: High energy density science (HEDS), as a discipline that has developed in the United States from National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA)-sponsored laboratory research programs, is, and will remain, a major component of the NNSA science and technology strategy. Its scientific borders are not restricted to NNSA. 'Frontiers in High Energy Density Physics: The X-Games of Contemporary Science' identified numerous exciting scientific opportunities in this field, while pointing to the need for a overa… more

Photovoltaic research opportunities. Final report

Description: The purpose of this study is to identify opportunities for photovoltaic (PV) research projects to capitalize on related but non-PV research. The study is performed under the assumption that a considerable body of ongoing semiconductor research in non-PV areas could be of value to its PV Program and the PV community in general. Research related to III-V compounds, thin films, and crystalline silicon materials is included. Research that is known to be PV-related or sponsored by DOE was excluded f… more

Toward a permanent lunar settlement in the coming decade: the Columbus Project

Description: The motivation for creating a permanent lunar settlement is sketched, and reasons for doing so in the coming decade are put forward. A basic plan to accomplish this is outlined, along technical and programmatic axes. It is concluded that founding a lunar settlement on the five hundredth anniversary of the Columbus landing - a Columbus Project - could be executed as a volunteer-intensive American enterprise requiring roughly six thousand man-years of skilled endeavor and a total Governmental con… more

Sedimentation plan to assess the impact of geothermal activities to the aquatic ecosystem in the Geyers Calistoga KGRA

Description: The prevention of sedimentation or siltation in aquatic ecosystems is always a key environmental issue in the development and operation of power plant units. This report describes a field program which will assess the amount of sedimentation in the streams and tributaties of the Geysers-Calistoga Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA) due to development-related or other site-specific activities. This sediment plan is one part of a four part venture - the others are water quality, benthic inverte… more

Air assisted fuel injection and ignition: a new concept to improve the automotive diesel engine. Monthly technical status report, May, 1977

Description: It is anticipated that by employing high temperature, high pressure air to inject fuel into the combustion chamber of a diesel engine, the combustion process can be improved significantly. Better combustion should lead to better fuel economy, lower emissions of nitrogen oxides and unburnt hydrocarbons, less smoke, less noxious odors, reduced noise, less vibrations, increased power per unit weight of the engine, improved cold starting capability and engine operation with a wider range of fuels. … more

Empirical Observations on the Unpredictable Behavior of Nuclear Matter

Description: While many aspects of matter are unpredictable from basic principles, there are some that are susceptible to empirical descriptions which can be quite accurate and beautiful. One such example from the field of ``Nuclear Matter Under Extreme Conditions`` is the distribution of the number of particles produced, or alternatively, of the energy carried by these particles, in energetic collisions of atomic nuclei. The present work consists of a series of published scientific papers on measurements o… more

Description: This report discusses the production of weapon grade plutonium and tritium as an economically attractive mode of operation for N-Reactor. With the successful completion of the proposed research and development program coproduct production in N-Reactor could begin in January 1967. Approximately 5 kg of tritium could be produced at a reduction in unit total cost of up to $7 per gram equivalent when compared to other modes of operation of N-Reactor that yield only-weapon grade plutonium. Tritium effluent control project progress report, July--September 1975. [Tritiated liquid waste decontamination by molecular excitation, electrolysis of high-level tritiated water, and catalytic exchange detritiation studies]

Description: In the Tritiated Liquid Waste Decontamination (Molecular Excitation) program, it was found that a 1/4'' Nd:YAG amplifier and a Faraday rotator isolator must be added to the oscillator to obtain the required power for the laser excitation experiments. The isotopic selectivity of the two-photon dissociation process was examined in more detail. The selectivity or ratio of HTO to H/sub 2/O molecules that are photodissociated was found to be on the order of 25, which is inadequate for application to… more
