Radioactive gas and hydrogen removal after a LOCE at the LOFT Facility

Description: The use of a silver-zeolite halogen adsorber placed in series with a hydrogen catalytic recombiner and a cryogenic noble gas adsorber assembly constitutes a waste gas processing system (WGPS) capable of handling hydrogen and fission product gases following a Loss-of-Coolant Experiment (LOCE). This paper describes: the types and quantities of gases expected to be found at the facility after a failed-fuel LOCE; the purpose of the WGPS; and the general configuration and expected decontamination fa… more

Advantages of palmolive alternate

Description: It has been proposed that Pu-238 be produced by irradiating neptunium solution in one or more loops in a reactor and then recovering the Pu-238 in a close-coupled separations plant. Such a scheme could replace the more conventional scheme of solid element fabrication, irradiation, and reprocessing for plutonium and neptunium recovery. This document presents the advantages of such a scheme from the standpoint of product purity and Pu-238 production.

Production test IP-694-A: Depleted uranium irradiation, K reactors

Description: The AEC has indicated a need for plutonium with a high concentration of the Pu-240 isotope. Concentrations up to 25 W/o Pu-240 have been requested with a firm commitment given for 25 kilograms of plutonium with at least 18 W/o Pu-240. To meet this production demand, irradiation of depleted uranium, 0.22 W/o U-235, will be undertaken. This test authorizes half of the irradiation in a Hanford K reactor, outlines the general plans, and presents the details of the irradiation. The objective of this… more

Production Test 105-8-MR, Supplement A: Uranium charging during reactor operation

Description: This memorandum describes a test which is to demonstrate the feasibility of routinely charging uranium slugs during reactor operation into tubes of the highest available powers and to provide functional testing of the equipment necessary to reduce such charging to a routine operation on all tubes in the reactor. This test will authorize the installation and routine operation of improved equipment for charging and discharging uranium during reactor operation on five central process tubes at C Re… more
