Relative determination of W-values for alpha particles in tissue equivalent and other gases. [5. 4 MeV alpha particles]

Description: W (the average energy to form an ion pair) for 5.4 MeV /sup 241/Am alpha particles in a Rossi-type tissue equivalent (T.E.) gas, argon and methane was determined to an accuracy better than 0.2% using a new automated data handling system. A vibrating reed electrometer and current digitizer were used to measure the current produced by completely stopping the alpha particles in a large cylindrical ionization chamber. A multichannel analyzer, operating in a slow multiscalar mode, was used to store … more

Sub-nanosecond plastic scintillator time response studies using laser produced x-ray pulsed excitation

Description: The light emission time response of quenched NElll plastic scintillators has been measured using a streak camera (20 ps resolution) and 100 to 180 ps, 1.06 ..mu..m, laser-produced, pulsed, low energy x-ray excitation. Each light output pulse was obtained by deconvolution from the film data using the x-ray temporal response measured with an x-ray sensitive streak camera (10 ps resolution). Time response parameters are presented for benzophenone and acetophenone, quenching agents which most effec… more

Instrumentation for measuring soft x-rays from laser produced plasmas

Description: Instrumentation has been developed at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory for measuring subkilovolt x-rays from laser-produced plasmas. This information is needed to do a complete energy balance on laser fusion experiments. The instruments must have thin windows and yet discriminate against the severe environment of other intense target emissions such as ions, electrons, and scattered laser light. Low energy x-ray measurements down to 0.1 keV will be presented using these absolutely calibrated de… more

Evidence for a neutrino-induced dilepton event in the A. N. L. 12-foot bubble chamber. [Approximately 2000 MeV/c/sup 2/]

Description: The event ..nu..p(n/sub s/) ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup 0/e/sup +/ ..nu../sub e/(n /sub s/), found in a bubble chamber, is considered. It is concluded that this event is clearly unusual when explained in terms of normal neutrino interactions. But if it is an example of dilepton production, it occurs at the expected rate of single lepton production. If it is due to the weak decay of a new baryon, the baryon mass appears to be near 2 GeV/c/sup 2/ and is unlikely to … more

Simple method to unfold NE 213 and stilbene neutron spectral data

Description: A very simple method is proposed wherein recoil proton scintillation data are reduced using the derivative unfolding technique. The approximations described require minimal calculation or storage and may be readily implemented on a mini computer. A digital filter is incorporated which yields a smoothed approximation to the slope of the pulse-height distribution, with error estimates. In order to accurately represent the scintillator light output without introducing discontinuities in the unfold… more

Special problems in nuclear instrumentation. Progress report, September 1, 1975--August 31, 1976

Description: Five different mixtures of polypropylene, nylon-11, and carbon black were prepared and several specimens were molded of each. The object of this program is to determine the compatability of these components and their suitability for applications in radiation dosimetry. Significant advances were made in the fabrication of small ionization chambers. A new air-equivalent chamber was designed which incorporates essentially all of these advances. Seven cables which are in use for carrying the curren… more

Inclusive Charged- and Neutral-Current Antineutrino-Proton Interactions at High Energy. [Cross Sections, Quark-Parton Model]

Description: Results on antineutrino-proton interactions observed in the Fermilab 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber are presented. The charged-current semi-inclusive distributions, as a function of X, Y, Q/sup 2/ and W, are compared with the predictions of the naive quark parton model. Within statistics, no marked dependence of the Y distribution on E/sub nu/ was observed. R/sub anti nu/, the antineutrino neutral-current to charged-current cross section ratio is calculated, and results are presented as a func… more

Microprocessor-assisted calibration for a remote working level monitor. [Radon daughter monitoring]

Description: A method is described for calibrating a Remote Working Level Monitor, an instrument which measures Working Level and Rn-daughter concentrations in the atmosphere. The method makes use of a microprocessor to calculate beta efficiencies for RaB and RaC from the counts accumulated in the RaA, Ra(B + C) and RaC' channels of the instrument. Both the alpha spectroscopic and total-alpha methods are used to determine the Rn-daughter concentrations. These methods require the processor to solve systems o… more

Liquid scintillation alpha counting and spectrometry and its application to bone and tissue samples

Description: Three methods for determination of alpha-emitting nuclides using liquid scintillation counting are compared, and the pertinent literature is reviewed. Data showing the application of each method to the measurement of plutonium concentration in tissue and bone samples are presented. Counting with a commercial beta-liquid scintillation counter and an aqueous-phase-accepting scintillator is shown to be accurate only in cases where the alpha activity is high (several hundred counts/min or more), on… more

MATCH package for the ANL three-view geometry program. [For matching particle tracks from various views to obtain proper input for TVGP]

Description: The ANL MATCH package consists of a set of 13 subroutines which are linked to the current 12-foot and 15-foot versions of the ANL TVGP program. Their purpose is to match the tracks from the various measured views to obtain a proper matched set of tracks to be processed by TVGP. The MATCH package can effectively handle up to 20 tracks per event measured in 2 or 3 views and, in cases of ambiguous match solutions, allow up to 10 match ambiguities. A basic assumption made is that the same number of… more

Soft x-ray imaging with a CCD area array

Description: To determine the feasibility of recovering data actively from x-ray imaging instruments used in the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory Laser Fusion Program, a commercial silicon video sensor was used to detect patterns of soft x-rays (1-8 keV). The sensor is a 2-dimensional frame transfer charge coupled device (CCD), modified to allow direct access of x-rays to the sensitive silicon. The x-ray sensitivity, linearity, and dynamic range of the CCD are discussed.
