Heavy quark production in ep collisions at HERA. [None]

Description: There are substantial production rates of heavy quarks from ep collisions at HERA. The center of mass energy of about 300 GeV is well above any b-quark threshold effects, and for b/bar b/ production, the cross section is estimated to be 3.3 nb per event, leading to rates approaching 10/sup 6/ b mesons per year. The rates for c/bar c/ production are about two orders of magnitude greater. Two major detectors are under construction and a program of heavy quark physics will start in 1990. 3 refs., … more

Some physics requirements for triggering in the intermediate tracking system of SDC

Description: I have investigated trigger requirements for the intermediate tracking system of the SDC detector, using muons in the final states of some physics processes of interest and relevance to the program envisaged to be pursued at the SSC. The study is done at the physics event generator level with the PYTHIA package, augmented by a very simplistic simulation of the momentum measurement expected from the intermediate tracking system. For the range in pseudorapidity of {vert bar}{eta}{vert bar} = 1.7-… more

Effect of Pb and air absorber thickness on [sup 137]Cs signal

Description: We present the results of a measurement to understand the effects of transverse misplacement of the [sup 137]Cs source tube inside the cast Pb plates of the SDC EMC calorimeter. The PMT current from a scintillator was measured as the [sup 137]Cs source was displaced by varying thicknesses of Pb, as well as varying thicknesses of air gap. At a nominal depth of 2 mm in Pb, we find a change in scintillator output of about 25%/mm, and about 10%/mm of air gap. The data are compared to a simple calcu… more

Use of the n,p scattering reaction for neutron flux measurements

Description: Several contemporary proton-recoil detectors are described and compared. These detectors have been used for neutron-spectrum measurements over various portions of the 10-keV-to-20-MeV energy range. Several factors which limit the accuracy of the results are compared quantitatively. General suggestions are given for setting and using standard cross sections and for future developments using the n,p scattering reaction.

High-intensity, subkolovolt x-ray calibration facility using a Cockroft--Walton proton accelerator

Description: Considerable need has arisen for the development of well-calibrated x-ray detectors capable of detecting photons with energies between 100 and 1000 electron-volts. This energy region is of significant interest since the x-ray emission from high-temperature (kT approximately 1.0 keV), laser-produced plasmas is predominantly in this range. A high-intensity, subkilovolt x-ray calibration source was developed which utilizes proton-induced inner-shell atomic fluorescence of low-Z elements. The high … more

Investigation of novel decay B _____ ____(2S)____K at BaBar

Description: We investigate the undocumented B meson decay, B{sup +} {yields} {Psi}(2S){omega}K{sup +}. The data were collected with the BaBar detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collier operating at the {gamma}(4S) resonance, a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV/c{sup 2}. The {gamma}(4S) resonance primarily decays to pairs of B-mesons. The BaBar collaboration at the PEP-II ring was located at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and was designed to study the collisions of pos… more

Commercial and Cost Effective Production of Two-Dimensional Read-Out Boards for Sub-Atomic Particle Detectors

Description: Tech-Etch has considerable experience in numerous related high precision etched Kapton® products including production of GEM foils. The required precision and production process for 2-D readout boards is similar to that developed for GEM foil production. Additionally, Tech-Etch has strong ties with several research institutions (namely Brookhaven National Laboratory, MIT and Yale University) that can help design and evaluate the performance of the readout boards produced at Tech-Etch. Since Te… more

Description: A new analysis technique using high-energy helium ions for the simultaneous elastic recoil detection of all three hydrogen isotopes in metal hydride systems extending to depths of several {micro}m's is presented. Analysis shows that it is possible to separate each hydrogen isotope in a heavy matrix such as erbium to depths of 5 {micro}m using incident 11.48MeV {sup 4}He{sup 2} ions with a detection system composed of a range foil and {Delta}E-E telescope detector. Limits on likesign dilepton production in. nu. /sub. mu. / interactions

Description: We have searched for the production of likesign dilepton events (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...) in a wideband neutrino beam at Fermilab using the 15-ft bubble chamber. We observe no signal above the background arising from conventional sources. Ultrafast Radiation Detection by Modulation of an Optical Probe Beam

Description: We describe a new class of radiation sensor that utilizes optical interferometry to measure radiation-induced changes in the optical refractive index of a semiconductor sensor medium. Radiation absorption in the sensor material produces a transient, non-equilibrium, electron-hole pair distribution that locally modifies the complex, optical refractive index of the sensor medium. Changes in the real (imaginary) part of the local refractive index produce a differential phase shift (absorption) of … more

The detector consists of 11 sub-detectors, that are further subdivided into 29 units (``granules``) that can be operated independently, which includes simultaneous data taking with independent data streams and independent triggers. The detector has 250,000 channels and is read out by front end modules, where the data is buffered in a pipeline w… more

Description: Experiences developing data acquisition system for the BaBar CP violation experiment located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center are presented. The BaBar detector consists of multiple independent subdetectors joined with a data acquisition system consisting of a large number of embedded PowerPC single board computers residing in VME crates. The data acquisition software is layered on the VxWorks real-time operating system. It is partitionable to allow subsystems (as well as test stands) t… more

Atmospheric neutrinos in Soudan 2.

Description: The value and zenith angle dependence of the atmospheric neutrino flavor ratio is interpreted as evidence for neutrino oscillations. The latest values from the Soudan 2 detector are presented. From 4.2 kt-years fiducial exposure, Soudan 2 measures R = 0.66 {+-} 0.11(stat) + 0.05--0.06(syst). Using a subset of the data with the best angular resolution, they plot the L/E distribution and use this to find the allowed region in oscillation parameter space. Their fit suggests that delta m-squared is… more

Observation of the moon shadow in deep underground muon flux.

Description: A shadow of the moon, with a statistical significance of 5{sigma}, has been observed in the underground muon flux at a depth of 2090 mwe using the Soudan 2 detector. The angular resolution of the detector is well described by a Gaussian with {sigma} {le}0.3{degree}. The position of the shadow confirms the alignment of the detector to better than 0.15{degree}. This alignment has remained stable during 10 years of data taking from 1989 through 1998.

Search for neutrinos from active galactic nuclei in Soudan 2.

Description: Models for AGN neutrino production suggest a measurable muon flux in underground detectors in this paper we comment on neutrino point sources and discuss our methods for determining an upper limit on the intensity of horizontal, neutrino induced muons with energy above 1 TeV at the Soudan 2 detector. We set a limit of 1.8 x 10{sup {minus}13} (cm{sup 2} sr s){sup {minus}} for detecting 5 TeV {nu}-induced muons from AGN.
