Electron Transfer Reactions of Excited Dyes With Metal Complexes. Progress Report, March 1, 1978-February 28, 1979. [Iron-Methylene Blue]

Description: An intense absorption band of /sup 3/MBH/sup 2 +/ at 700nm was characterized in several media and its pK/sub A/ was measured to be 7.17 +- .1 in water. Flash photolysis show that semiethylene blue, MBH/sup +/, formed by quenching /sup 3/MBH/sup 2 +/ with Fe/sub II/(H/sub 2/O)/sub 6//sup 2 +/, decays by disproportionation at a diffusion-controlled rate. Cryotribology: Development of cryotribological theories and application to cryogenic devices

Description: High-performance superconducting solenoids are susceptible to premature quenches, or superconducting to normal state transitions, due to abrupt conductor movements within the winding. Studies of the structure and function of Mms6, a bacterial protein that promotes the formation of magnetic nanoparticles

Description: Here we report structural and functional studies of Mms6, a biomineralization protein that can promote the formation in vitro of magnetic nanoparticles with sizes and morphologies similar to the magnetites synthesized by magnetotactic bacteria. We found the binding pattern of Mms6 to ferric ion to be two-phase and multivalent. We quantatively determined that Mms6 binds one Fe{sup 3+} with a very high affinity (K{sub d} = 10{sup -16} M). THERMAL EXPANSION OF URANIUM DIOXIDE. Final Report

Description: The thermal expansions of commercial uranium dioxide specimens were measured up to the melting point. The linear expansion of dense, normal grain size UO/sub 2/ follows closely the equationi L = L/sub 0/(1 + 6.0 x 10/sup -6/t + 2.0 x 10/sup -9/t/sup 1.7 x 10/sup -12/t/sup 3/).
