Applications of concrete polymer materials for the rehabilitation of bridge decks

Description: The rapid deterioration of concrete bridge decks as a result of the increased use of deicing salts is one of the most severe problems facing the highway industry today. One possible solution to the problem is the use of concrete polymer materials. The materials of prime interest are polymer-impregnated concrete (PIC) and polymer concrete (PC), both of which have excellent durability and strength properties. Three potential applications: repair of deteriorated bridge decks, polymer impregnation … more

Alternate materials of construction for geothermal applications. Progress report No. 13, April--June 1977

Description: A program to determine if non-metallic materials such as polymers, concrete polymer composites, and refractory cements can be utilized as materials of construction in geothermal processes is in progress. To date, several high temperature polymer concrete systems have been formulated, laboratory and field tests performed in brine, flashing brine, and steam at temperatures up to 260/sup 0/C, and economic studies started. Laboratory data for exposure times greater than 2 years are available. Resul… more

Characterization of ionizing radiation damage in DNA. Final report, February 1, 1977--September 30, 1977. [Gamma radiation, fast neutrons, uv radiation]

Description: An experimental method for the measurement of covalent DNA-protein cross-links in bacteriophage T7 based on phenol-water countercurrent distribution has been developed and a statistical model for quantitative interpretation of these measurements has been devised. It has been found that DNA-protein cross links accumulate linearly with dose in response to exposure to /sup 60/Co gamma radiation at a rate .05 to .20 times the rate of accumulation of double strand breaks if phage are exposed in high… more

Cementing of geothermal wells. Progress report No. 6, July--September 1977

Description: A coordinated program for the development of improved cements specifically designed for geothermal well applications was started in April 1976. Since that time an assessment of the state of the art of well cementing has been made, a management plan prepared, and research on organic and inorganic cementing materials started.

Cementing of geothermal wells. Progress report No. 7, October--December 1977

Description: Progress in work to implement the program plan for the development of improved high temperature cementing materials for geothermal wells is reported. Work on the first element of the program management plan (problem definition) was completed and a report issued. The materials development and property verification phases of the plan are in progress. Plans for the down-hole testing phase of the program are being formulated. The most promising high temperature polymer cement (PC) system identified… more
