Integrated system for production of neutronics and photonics calculational constants. Volume 15, Part D. The LLL Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (ENDL): descriptions of individual evaluations for Z = 90 to 98

Description: Evaluation procedures used to produce sets of evaluated data for the 33 heavy isotopes that fall in the range Z = 90 to Z = 98 are described. At the beginning of the discussion for each individual isotope, a computer-generated listing is given which summarizes the main properties of the data sets that are contained in the evaluation. (RWR)

Optimizing the mirror (fusion--fission) hybrid reactor for plutonium production

Description: An analytic model of the fusion components is used to generate a consistent set of fusion parameters, and component costs as parameters are varied. A model of the blanket, based on neutronic and thermal hydraulics, is then used to analyze the trade-offs of energy production vs plutonium production dictated by blanket type and management. An economic discussion of fuel cost is also given. (MOW)

Evaluation of the use of sludge containing plutonium as a soil conditioner for food crops

Description: An experiment was conducted to assess the potential hazard associated with the use of sludge containing plutonium as a soil conditioner for food crops. Conditions were chosen that would maximize exposure to the $sup 239$Pu in the sludge through resuspension and in plant content and thus approximated the maximum potential hazards due to the inhalation and ingestion pathways. The estimated 50-year radiation doses to the pulmonary region of the lung, bone, and liver based on the results of the inh… more

Assessment of sediment monitoring at LLNL

Description: Three separate sediment monitoring studies have been conducted at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Livermore site. ``Sediment`` is defined here as finely divided solid materials that have settled out of an active stream or standing water. Sediment samples from all three studies were analyzed for a number of contaminants including {sup 239}pu, {sup 3}H, gamma emitting radionuclides, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and pesticides. The analytical results for metals and or… more

Tentative method for the determination of plutonium-239 and plutonium-238 in water (by a coprecipitation anion exchange technique)

Description: A procedure for the determination of plutonium 238 and plutonium 239 in water is described. The procedure consists of a coprecipitation, an anion exchange separation and electrodeposition, followed by alpha pulse height analysis. More specifically, the sample is acidified with nitric acid and plutonium-242 is added as a tracer before any chemical separations are performed. Iron is added to the water as iron (III) and the plutonium is coprecipitated with the iron as ferric hydroxide by adding am… more
