Pi-decay muons from the SLC positron source

Description: This note extends the calculations presented in CN-295 (''additional muon calculations for the SLC positron source'') by taking into account the photoproduction of pions in the SLC positron target with subsequent decay into muons. By taking into account the probability of pion interaction in the target/wave guide/solenoid complex versus decay in drift reqions, we have concluded that this source of muons will not significanly contribute to the overall levels presented in the previous note.

Inclusive and Exclusive |Vub|

Description: The current status of the determinations of CKM matrix element |V{sub ub}| via exclusive and inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays is reviewed. The large datasets collected at the B-Factories, and the increased precision of theoretical calculations have allowed an improvement in the determination of |V{sub ub}|. However, there are still significant uncertainties. In the exclusive approach, the most precise measurement of the pion channel branching ratio is obtained by an untagged analysis. … more

ANALYSIS OF THE INTERACTION OF 300-Mev NEUTRONS WITH XENON

Description: An investigation of the interactions between 300-Mev neutrons and xenon was made by means of a cloud chamber in a pulsed magnetic field of 21,700 gauss placed in the neutron beam of the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron. Eighty-seven negative pion events and 257 other stars were analyzed. In addition an experimental check was made on the energy of the incoming neutrons. Classification, identification, and angular and energy distributions of prongs associated with all events are presented. Interpretat… more

Energy flow in a hadronic cascade: Application to hadroncalorimetry

Description: The hadronic cascade description developed in an earlierpaper is extended to the response of an idealized fine-sampling hadroncalorimeter. Calorimeter response is largely determined by the transferof energy E_e from the hadronic to the electromagnetic sector via \pi0production. Fluctuations in this quantity produce the "constant term" inhadron calorimeter resolution. The increase of its fractional mean, f_\rmem^0= \vevE_e/E, with increasing incident energy E causes the energydependence of the \… more

Measurement of the B-bar 0 to D^* l ^- nu-bar Branching Fraction with a Partial Reconstruction Technique

Description: Presented is a precise measurement of the {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} branching fraction using 81.47 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The measurement was performed by partially reconstructing the D*{sup +} meson from {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} decays using only the soft pion of the D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi… more

Antiproton Yield Diagnostics for the Tevatron I Debuncher

Description: During start-up of the CERN AA, many hours of machine experiments went into the study and optimization of antiproton yields. Those involved in the commissioning programme experienced the difficulty of tuning a new machine to accept a low-intensity full-aperture beam. The antiproton yield could only be obtained by integrating a slow Schottky scan of the beam on the injection orbit, normalized with respect to primary beam intensity by a charge transformer just in front of the production target. A… more

Performance confirmation of the Belle II imaging Time Of Propogation (iTOP) prototype counter

Description: The Bell Detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider performed extremely well, logging an integrated luminosity an order of magnitude higher than the design baseline. With this inverse attobarn of integrated luminosity, time-dependent CP-violation inn the 3rd generation beauty quarks was firmly established, and is now a precision measurement. Going beyond this to explore if the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism is the only contributor to quark-mixing, and to interrogate the flavo… more

Latest experimental information on {epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}

Description: The authors review the latest experimental results in search for direct CP-violation by measuring the CP-violating parameters Re({epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}) in neutral kaon decays. The recent result from Fermilab-KTeV Re({epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}) = (28.0 {+-} 4.1) x 10{sup {minus}4}, and the new preliminary result from CERN-NA48 Re({epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}) = (14.0 {+-} 4.3) x 10{sup {minus}4}, are presented. Both experiments, though using very different techniques, have now performed very … more

Observation and study of baryonic B decays: B -> D(*) p pbar, D(*) p pbar pi, and D(*) p pbar pi pi

Description: We present a study of ten B-meson decays to a D{sup (*)}, a proton-antiproton pair, and a system of up to two pions using BABAR's data set of 455 x 10{sup 6} B{bar B} pairs. Four of the modes {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup 0}p{bar p}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup 0}p{bar p}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup ast+}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -} are studied with improved statistics compared to previous measurements; six of the modes (B{sup -} {yields} D{sup … more
