Physics Division Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending March 20, 1951

Description: Technical report covering classified work of the Critical Experiments Program in the Physics Division for the period December 20, 1950 to March 20, 1951. Report outlines investigations of properties of critical assemblies composed of uranium and various reflectors and moderators, preliminary measurements of the effective energy for fission in the assembly. Report for General Research September 18 to December 11, 1950 (Actinium Volume)

Description: The purpose of the research work presented in this volume is to develop a process for the separation and purification of actinium-227 produced by neutron bombardment of radium-226 and to develop methods by which uniform films of actinium metal may be deposited on metallic surfaces. The design work on the cave structure and mechanical equipment used in the actinium separation is proceeding on schedule. As the mechanical design phase is nearing completion the emphasis is being directed toward pro… more

Some Comments on the Mechanism of Fission

Description: A correlation of spontaneous fission rates with Z and A is made to show that these rates depend on the nuclear type. Some suggestions as to the mechanisms are given and it is also shown how these relate to the mechanism of slow neutron and photo fission.

High Energy Proton Spallation -- Fission of Uranium

Description: The fission and spallation reactions caused in uranium by bombardment with high energy protons (340 t o 350 MeV) were investigated. The reaction products were separated from the target by chemical processes and identified by their radioactive properties. The relative yields of the observed fission products were measured, and the results plotted as a function of mass number. Several of the spallation products were identified and their yields estimated. An attempt was made to determine the most p… more

Report for General Research December 26, 1950 to April 16, 1951 (Supporting Research Volume)

Description: This volume presents the quarterly results of that portion of the research and development which is directed towards establishing new techniques and instruments and towards improving present methods for determining levels of radioactivity accurately and safely. The locally developed amplifier of high gain and of wide dynamic range has been shown to provide plateaus suitable for the simultaneous counting of alpha and beta particles. Commercially available amplifiers have failed to exhibit suitab… more

FURTHER RESULTS ON THE PRODUCTION OF NEUTRAL MESONS BY PHOTONS

Description: Further measurements have been made on the photoproduction of neutral mesons using the gamma-gamma coincidence technique. New data have been obtained on the gamma-gamma correlation curves in beryllium. The angular distribution of the photo mesons in Be has been determined and found to be strongly peaked forward. The dependence on the atomic number A of production has been found to obey an A{sup2/3} law. Some data obtained for production in hydrogen show that the pi-zero and pi-plus production c… more
