Resonance Capture of Neutrons by Thorium Cylinders

Description: The dependence of the resonance integral for thorium upon geometry and thorium temperature has been determined through reactivity coefficient measurements performed in the Hanford Test Pile. The geometry dependence was investigated using thorium cylinders of various diameters in the form of solid elements and shells. The temperature dependence (Doppler broadening) was studied by heating thorium elements and permitting them to cool while observing the change in pile reactivity.

Investigations of Some Unusual Nuclear Reactions and Study of Double Beta Decay

Description: The acceleration of charged particles in the Berkeley 60-inch and 184-inch cyclotrons has made it possible to study a large variety of nuclear reactions. The characterization of the products from these reactions is done by chemical separations of elemental fractions and subsequent identification of the nuclides formed.

Possible Manifestations Of A Pion-Pion Interaction

Description: The pion-pion interaction is of great theoretical importance and must be understood before the other and more familiar interactions can be systematically analyzed. Therefore, various experiments to verify the existence of a P resonance in the w w system are proposed.

Radiation Damage in Graphite III. Kinetic Reactions of Interstitial Complexes: An Experimental Study

Description: Dimensional changes can be used to distinguish two mechanisms for the radiation formation and decomposition of interstitial complexes in periodically irradiated graphites. When reaction occurs at both ends of the chain described previously, the rate of formation of interstitial carbon atoms is proportional to the magnitude of the exposure. When reaction occurs at one end only, the rate is initially dependent on exposure and then becomes constant. Short reirradiations after an anneal involve rea… more

Double folded potentials through momentum space integration: RHOQ and FINRAN methods and users manual

Description: The principal techniques employed in obtaining, through momentum space integrations, double folded potentials for the analysis of nucleus--nucleus interactions are summarized. The primary emphasis is on numerical accuracy; therefore, no significant effort was made to minimize computer time other than to cast the problem in momentum space. The code RHOQ obtains the density distributions in momentum space, while FINRAN utilizes these results along with a nucleon--nucleon interaction in momentum s… more

Nuclear Reactions on the Palladium Isotopes

Description: The problem of interest in this investigation was to determine the cross sections of five nuclear reactions which occur when irradiating natural palladium with neutrons which have energy values of 15.1, 15.9, and 16.3 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to a copper monitor which was "sandwitched" in with the palladium target.

Plutonium Fuelled Thermal Reactors with High Conversion Ratios

Description: The development of plutonium fuelled power reactors with good neutron economy and low fuel inventory is an important objective of the United States atomic energy program. The present study is concerned with the adaptability of current reactor types for this purpose.

Calcium Uranium(IV) Fluoride; Precipitation and Reduction to Metal

Description: Using ferrous ion in the presence of fluoride for reducing uranium(VI) to the four state, the salt calcium uranium (IV) fluoride can be precipitated from uranyl nitrate solutions. X-ray studies have shown that the precipitate is a true double salt and not a mixture of the two insoluble fluorides of calcium and uranium. The salt settles rapidly and can be either filtered or centrifuged. Waste losses during precipitation and washing were on the order of 2.0 and 0.4 per cent, respectively. These w… more

Spectral Hardening Correction to η

Description: Two methods for calculating the *reduction in η due to spectral hardening have been used. In the first method it is assumed that the absorption cross section of U-238 is l/v. This indicates no change in η within the error of the calculation. In the second it is assumed that the scattering cross section of uranium is constant. A decrease in η of 3.0% at the centerline of the slug is indicated by this calculation. The assumption U-238 is a l/v absorber is regarded as the most reasonable of the tw… more

Theory of Point Defect Annealing in Metals

Description: The kinetics of the annealing of point defects, either by migration to sinks or by recombination, is complicated by the occurrence of a variety of simultaneous reactions. An extensive theoretical study of annealing processes is in progress at Brookhaven based on the isolation and combination of simple kinetic steps. When analytic solutions could not be found, computer solutions have been used to obtain useful approximations and to determine their regions of validity. Two migration reaction sche… more

Chemistry of the "Silver Reactor"

Description: The use of a reactor charged with silver nitrate coated packing for removal of radio-iodine from the waste gases of Hanford chemical processing plants has been successful in removing approximately 99.5 percent of this activity. Studies by the Radiological Sciences Department indicated the desirability of further reducing the amount of radio-iodine released to the atmosphere. Therefore, this study was undertaken with the objectives of better understanding the inherent limitations to iodine remov… more

Population of Nuclei Via 7Li-Induced Binary Reactions

Description: The authors have investigated the population of nuclei formed in binary reactions involving {sup 7}Li beams on targets of {sup 160}Gd and {sup 184}W. The {sup 7}Li + {sup 184}W data were taken in the first experiment using the LIBERACE Ge-array in combination with the STARS Si {Delta}E-E telescope system at the 88-Inch Cyclotron of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. By using the Wilczynski binary transfer model, in combination with a standard evaporation model, they are able to reproduc… more
