Feasibility of laser pumping with neutron fluxes from present-day large tokamaks

Description: The minimum fusion-neutron flux needed to observe nuclear-pumped lasing with tokamaks can be reduced substantially by optimizing neutron scattering into the laser cell, located between adjacent toroidal-field coils. The laser lines most readily pumped are probably the /sup 3/He-Ne lines at 0.633 ..mu.. and in the infrared, where the /sup 3/He-Ne gas is excited by energetic ions produced in the /sup 3/He(n,p)T reaction. CALCULATIONS OF THE DOPPLER COEFFICIENT OF LARGE CERAMIC-FUELED FAST REACTORS

Description: ABS>Calculations of the Doppler coefficient of large, ceramicfueled fast reactors containing plutonium were made by means of the ELMOE program to provide accurate flux calculations. The temperature-dependent cross sections of P. Greebler et al., for U/sup 238/ and Pu/sup 239/ were used. Measurement of the neutron spin structure function---Test of the Bjorken sum rule

Description: As experiment to measure the neutron spin-dependent structure function g{sub 1}{sup n} (x) over a range in x from 0.04 to 0.7 and with Q{sup 2} > 1 (GeV/c){sup 2} is presented. A fast neutron time of flight system for use with cyclotrons

Description: A reference pulse generator, transistorized timedifference-to-pulse- height converter, and beam pulse scaler are described and discussed as to their function in the fast neutron time-of-flight system for use with cyclotrons, The system is used for angular distribution and cross section measurements. Status of NTD Ge bolometer material and devices

Description: This status report is a direct follow-up to the presentation given at the first IR Detector Technology Workshop which took place at NASA Ames Research Center on July 12 and 13, 1983. FUEL CYCLES FOR AN 800 Mw(t) PEBBLE-BED REACTOR

Description: Reactivity lifetime calculations were made for an 800Mw(t) pebble-bed reactor on the basis of a batch-fueling cycle, a once-through equilibrium cycle, and a gradedexposure equilibrium cycle. The maximum lifetime, obtained with the graded-exposure equilibrium cycle, was 1.41 fissions per initial fissionable atom. The Angular Distribution of Fission Fragments From the Fast Neutron-Induced Fission of U-234

Description: Submitted to Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville. The fast neutron-induced fission cross section of U/sup 234/ was measured from threshold to 4-Mev neutron energy. A maximum of 1.26 barns was found at 850 kev followed by a minimum of 1.10 barns at 8050 kev. The angular ani-sotropy of the fragment distribution was measured for neutron energies from 400 kev to 4 Mev. Analysis of the boron pile measurement of the average neutron yield per fission of /sup 252/Cf: (AWBA development program)

Description: The Harwell Boron Pile measurement of the average number of prompt neutrons emitted per fission, ..nu..-bar/sub p/, of /sup 252/Cf was analyzed in detail by a Monte Carlo method. From the calculated energy dependence of the neutron detection efficiency a value of ..nu..-bar/sub p/ = 3.733 +- 0.022 was obtained. This value is 0.76 percent higher than the original reported value of 3.705 +- 0.015. Possible causes for this increase are discussed. 3 figures, 6 tables.
