Hot pressing of EuB/sub 6/

Description: Europium boride pellets with 92% of theoretical density were prepared by hot-pressing. By ball milling the starting powder, hot-pressing temperature could be reduced to 1700/sup 0/C. The lower hot-pressing temperature provided better control over final density and gave a more desirable microstructure.

Existing experimental criticality data applicable to nuclear-fuel-transportation systems

Description: Analytical techniques are generally relied upon in making criticality evaluations involving nuclear material outside reactors. For these evaluations to be accepted the calculations must be validated by comparison with experimental data for a known set of conditions having physical and neutronic characteristics similar to those conditions being evaluated analytically. The purpose of this report is to identify those existing experimental data that are suitable for use in verifying criticality cal… more

Tank study committee report

Description: Six major problem areas have surfaced in the past twenty-five years concerning the use of plutonium tankage. The most significant of these involves the use of borosilicate glass as a neutron absorber. Approximately thirty recommendations and criteria resulted from a study of these problem areas. Not all of the criteria and recommendations are unanimously supported by all members of the committee. The committee agrees that problem areas that can be handled on a short-term basis are being pursued… more

GLASS FABRICATION AND PRODUCT CONSISTENCY TESTING OF LANTHANIDE BOROSILICATE GLASS FOR PLUTONIUM DISPOSITION

Description: The Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE/EM) plans to conduct the Plutonium Disposition Project at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, SC, to disposition excess weapons-usable plutonium. A plutonium glass waste form is a leading candidate for immobilization of the plutonium for subsequent disposition in a geologic repository. The objectives of this present task were to fabricate plutonium-loaded lanthanide borosilicate (LaBS) Frit B glass and perform testing to provi… more

Proposal of solid titanium shim and control rods

Description: This report is a suggestion offered for a design modification regarding the material and layout of control and shim rods for the proposed G pile under design. The author suggests considering solid 2 inch diameter titanium control rods, in place of gadolinium-steel hollow 3 inch diameter rods which have been considered to this point. From a material cost and weight standpoint, and with regard to the neutron absorption properties, this suggestion appears better or equal to the original design pro… more

AFCT/TFCT/ISFS Program. Technical progress report for the period October 1, 1977--December 31, 1977

Description: This is the eighth in a series of quarterly progress reports on studies performed for the Alternate Fuel Cycle Technologies/Thorium Fuel Cycle Technologies/International Spent Fuel Receipt and Storage (AFCT/TFCT/ISFS) Program, formerly the LWR Fuel Recycle Program. This program is designed to provide information needed by industry to close the back end of the power reactor fuel cycle. During the past quarter, studies were conducted in the following tasks: Survey of Current Technology of Fuel Ha… more
