Neutral Currents - The Structure of the Coupling

Description: The authors report here on latest results from an investigation of the form of the neutral current coupling in the inclusive channels {nu}{sub {mu}} + N {yields} {nu}{sub {mu}} + hadrons and {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} + N {yields} {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} + hadrons. The experiment was conducted by the Caltech-Fermilab group in October 1974. The data were taken in the Fermilab narrow band beam set to a mean secondary hadron energy of {+-} 170 GeV. The distributions of total energy, observed in the target … more

Inclusive Charged- and Neutral-Current Antineutrino-Proton Interactions at High Energy. [Cross Sections, Quark-Parton Model]

Description: Results on antineutrino-proton interactions observed in the Fermilab 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber are presented. The charged-current semi-inclusive distributions, as a function of X, Y, Q/sup 2/ and W, are compared with the predictions of the naive quark parton model. Within statistics, no marked dependence of the Y distribution on E/sub nu/ was observed. R/sub anti nu/, the antineutrino neutral-current to charged-current cross section ratio is calculated, and results are presented as a func… more

Five-quark model with flavour-changing neutral current and dimuon events

Description: The recent dimuon data seem to suggest either the necessity of flavor-changing hadronic neutral current or proliferation of quarks beyond charm or both. It is shown how a five-quark model based on simple gauge group SU(2) x U(1) x U(1)' can generate the flavor-changing, in particular the needed charm-changing, neutral current in a natural fashion. A substantial D/sup 0/--D/sup -0/ mixing can be obtained to account for the ''wrong-sign'' dimuons observed in ..nu../sub ..… more

Neutrino interactions with e/sup +/. mu. /sup -/ and multiple K/sup 0/'s. [Branching ratio]

Description: A scan for directly produced positrons in 5,000 neutrino interactions in the neon (21 percent) hydrogen filled bubble chamber at Fermilab has yielded 15 events, 9 of which have ..mu../sup -/'s identified in the external muon identifier. On correcting for detection efficiency one obtains sigma(e/sup +/..mu../sup -/)/sigma(..mu../sup -/) approximately 1 x 10/sup -2/ for E/sub e/sup +// > .8 GeV and E/sub ..nu../ > 5 GeV. The kaon multiplicity is unexpectedly high. Eleven of the events have one or… more

Weinberg--Salam gauge model and neutrino proton elastic scattering. [Differential cross sections]

Description: Elastic scattering of neutrino on proton is studied in the Weinberg-Salam gauge model of neutral currents. Particular attention is paid to the experimental cuts relevant to two recent BNL experiments and spectra averaging so that model predictions can be directly compared to the experimental data. The uncertainty in the calculation due to changes in the parameters which are not well determined such as the mass of the axial vector meson is emphasized. It is concluded that the simple Weinberg-Sal… more

Quarks and Partons. [Review]

Description: This contribution reviews the evidence accumulated over the past year in favor of quarks and partons. Then it applies the quark ideas in order to interpret the neutrino-induced production of charm and the structure of neutral currents.

Inclusive neutrino interactions in a six quark model

Description: The effects of non-diagonal terms in the neutral current of an SU(2) x U(1) gauge six-quark model with slow rescaling are examined. The model reproduces the experimental charged current data with appropriate choice of heavy quark masses. The experimental neutral current data requires at least five quarks to explain it. In our context, the predictions for various heavy quark masses and quark mixings differ most for energies in the range 0 to 50 GeV. The various quantities are also calculated for… more
