Characterization and analysis of Devonian shales as related to release of gaseous hydrocarbons. Well N-4 Hardin County, Illinois

Description: Comprehensive characterization work was performed on shales from Hardin County, Illinois (N-4). A total of 39 samples (19 for Battelle and 20 for other DOE contractors) were collected from this site. N-4 shales are basically characterized by complete absence of hydrocarbon gases and rather low organics (C-H) contents. In the absence of hydrocarbon gases, no meaningful correlations could be observed between the characterization data and potential productive capacity of the well.

Hydrodynamics of a vertical hydraulic fracture

Description: We have developed a numerical algorithm, HUBBERT, to simulate the hydrodynamics of a propagating vertical, rectangular fracture in an elastic porous medium. Based on the IFD method, this algorithm assumes fracture geometry to be prescribed. The breakdown and the creation of the incipient fracture is carried out according to the Hubbert-Willis theory. The propagation of the fracture is based on the criterion provided by Griffith, based on energy considerations. The deformation properties of the … more

Study of metallic materials for solid oxide fuel cell interconnect applications.

Description: Metallic interconnect acts as a gas separator and a gas distributor and therefore, it needs to function adequately in two widely different environments. The interconnect material will be exposed to air on one side and natural gas or coal-derived synthesis gas on the other side. The viable material for the interconnect application must be resistant not only to oxidation but also carburization in hydrocarbon containing low-oxygen environments. In addition, the scales that develop on the exposed s… more

Gas Storage Technology Consortium Quarterly Report: July-September 2005

Description: Gas storage is a critical element in the natural gas industry. Producers, transmission and distribution companies, marketers, and end users all benefit directly from the load balancing function of storage. The unbundling process has fundamentally changed the way storage is used and valued. As an unbundled service, the value of storage is being recovered at rates that reflect its value. Moreover, the marketplace has differentiated between various types of storage services, and has increasingly r… more

Methane hydrate formation and dissociation in a partially saturated sand

Description: To predict the behavior of hydrate-bearing sediments and the economic extractability of natural gas from reservoirs containing gas hydrates, we need reservoir simulators that properly represent the processes that occur, as well as accurate parameters. Several codes are available that represent some or all of the expected processes, and values for some parameters are available. Where values are unavailable, modelers have used estimation techniques to help with their predictions. Although some of… more

Understanding the response of commercial and institutional organizations to the California energy crisis. A report to the California Energy Commission - Sylvia Bender, Project Manager

Description: Beginning in the summer of 2000, California experienced serious energy supply problems, sharp increases in wholesale (and retail) electricity and natural gas prices, and isolated blackouts. In response to the rapidly worsening electricity situation in California in late 2000, the state set, as an initial goal, the reduction of the state's peak demand for the summer of 2001 by 5,000 megawatts. To meet this goal, the governor and legislature took a variety of steps to enhance supply, encourage ra… more

Performance Characteristics of an Extended Throat Flow Nozzle for the Measurement of High Void Fraction Multi-Phase Flows

Description: An extended throat flow nozzle has been examined as a device for the measurement of very high void fraction multi-phase flows. Due to its greater density and partial contact with the wall, the equilibrium velocity of the liquid phase appreciably lags that of the lighter gas phase. The two phases are strongly coupled resulting in pressure drops across the contraction and in the extended throat that are significantly different than those experienced in single-phase flow. Information about the mas… more
