Alternative futures for the Department of Energy National Laboratories

Description: This Task Force was asked to propose alternate futures for the Department of Energy laboratories noted in the report. The authors` intensive ten months` study revealed multiple missions and sub-missions--traditional missions and new missions--programs and projects--each with factors of merit. They respectively suggest that the essence of what the Department, and particularly the laboratories, should and do stand for: the energy agenda. Under the overarching energy agenda--the labs serving the e… more

Progress in amorphous silicon PV technology: An update

Description: To reach the 15% stabilized efficiency goal for amorphous silicon (a-Si) modules by the year 2005, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has established four research teams. The teams -- with members from industry, universities, and NREL -- have been in operation for 2.5 years now. Consensus has been reached that a triple-junction a-Si structure is needed to reach the efficiency goal. Performance parameter goals for the overall structure and the three component cells have been formulated. Al… more

Amorphous silicon photovoltaic manufacturing technology - phase 2A. Semiannual subcontract report, May 1, 1994--October 31, 1994

Description: The objectives for this task are to integrate and test the automated encapsulation system designed in the second year of this effort. Once the system is fully integrated, UPG will collect and analyze data from continuous production runs employing the advanced encapsulation materials and processes utilized in the manufacture of POWERGLASS modules. Representative modules encapsulated utilizing the automated station will then be submitted for qualification (NREL/TR-213-3624) testing. This task is … more

GPP user`s guide - a general-purpose postprocessor for wind turbine data analysis

Description: GPP (pronounced {open_quotes}jeep{close_quotes}) is a General-Purpose Postprocessor for wind turbine data analysis. The author, a member of the Wind Technology Division (WTD) of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), developed GPP to postprocess test data and simulation predictions. GPP reads data into large arrays and allows the user to run many types of analyses on the data stored in memory. It runs on inexpensive computers common in the wind industry. One can even use it on a lapto… more

Experimental investigation of aerodynamic devices for wind turbine rotational speed control. Phase 1

Description: An investigation was undertaken to identify the aerodynamic performance of five separate trailing-edge control devices, and to evaluate their potential for wind turbine overspeed and power modulation applications. A modular two-dimensional wind tunnel model was constructed and evaluated during extensive wind tunnel testing. Aerodynamic lift, drag, suction, and pressure coefficient data were acquired and analyzed for various control configurations and angles of attack. To further interpret their… more

Looking at pollution control in a new light: Photochemistry for a cleaner environment

Description: This phamphet, from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory, describes a major new development in the field of photochemistry. The NREL/Sandia team has developed a pollution control technique - photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) that uses the energy in light to destroy environmental contaminants. Applicable as both a waste clean-up and a pollution control technique, PCP could help thousands of businesses comply with environmental regulations.
