Stability of plutonium contaminated sediments in the Miami--Erie Canal. [Mound Facility, Ohio, radioactive effluents monitoring]

Description: This study was conducted to evaluate the stability of plutonium-contaminated sediment in the Miami-Erie Canal. Correlations were sought to relate concentrations at air sampling stations to plutonium-238 concentrations in air and stack emissions, wind direction, particulate loading, rainfall, and construction activities. There appears to be some impact on airborne concentrations at air sampling stations 122 and 123 from the contaminated sediment in the canal and ponds area. For purposes of this … more

A high-speed low-sensitivity calorimeter for high activity (Ad Interim Report)

Description: This document is a March 1949 Ad Interim Report on the development of a high-speed, low-sensitivity calorimeter at the Mound Laboratory. This calorimeter is a zero-compensating, thermocouple, twin type. The outside diameter of the aluminum tubing was machined for a slip fit into the glass test tube. Prior to assembling in the test tube, an aluminum plug was pressed in it midway from the ends. A groove was also milled on the outside down to the plug, and a copper-constantan thermocouple was secu… more

Hazard analysis of Miamisburg Park Improvement Project

Description: The City of Miamisburg plans to modify two existing small ponds just west of Mound Laboratory in the Community Park. The north pond will be deepened and made into a solar energy pond to heat a bath house and swimming pool, and the south pond will be deepened and made into a fishing pond. Because the sediment in both ponds contains small amounts of plutonium and will be moved during the modifications, this work has been reviewed for potential health and safety impacts. This analysis covered the … more

Determination of the purity of polonium by means of the vacuum balance (Ad Interim Report)

Description: The assay technique is discussed in detail. The results of three purity determinations are: 94.92 per cent, 100.50 per cent, and 106.9 per cent. The errors present in each determination are stated. The inherent dangers in the present procedure are pointed out, and an improved method is outlined.

Plutonium Vulnerability Management Plan

Description: This Plutonium Vulnerability Management Plan describes the Department of Energy`s response to the vulnerabilities identified in the Plutonium Working Group Report which are a result of the cessation of nuclear weapons production. The responses contained in this document are only part of an overall, coordinated approach designed to enable the Department to accelerate conversion of all nuclear materials, including plutonium, to forms suitable for safe, interim storage. The overall actions being t… more

Assessment of the AWC TRUclean process for use on Mound soils and sediments

Description: The AWC TRUclean System has been proposed as a method to reduce the volume of LSA waste during D&D excavation of Pu-238 contaminated soils on the Mound Site and Pu-238 contaminated sediments in the Miami-Erie Canal. Following test runs with Mound soil, AWC suggested that the TRUclean Process could reduce the amount of LSA waste by greater than 90% if a machine could be built and used to process the Mound soil. The cost savings which could potentially be realized by assuming this magnitude of vo… more

Process development status report for advanced manufacturing projects

Description: This is the final status report for the approved Advanced Manufacturing Projects for FY 1989. Five of the projects were begun in FY 1987, one in FY 1988, and one in FY 1989. The approved projects cover technology areas in welding, explosive material processing and evaluation, ion implantation, and automated manufacturing. It is expected that the successful completion of these projects well result in improved quality and/or reduced cost for components produced by Mound. Those projects not brough… more

The solution chemistry of polonium (Ad Interim Report)

Description: This document is a March 1949 Ad Interim Report from the Mound Laboratory on the solution chemistry of polonium. A consideration of the valences of the elements of the Group VI-A would indicate that the oxidation states of -2, 2, 4, and 6 might be expected for polonium. From the decrease in stability of the hydrides of these elements with increase in atomic number, one would expect that the compound H{sub 2} Po would be very unstable and that the oxidation state of -2 would not occur in solutio… more
