Probing the Geometry of Warped String Compactifications at the LHC

Description: Warped string compactifications, characterized by the nonsingular behavior of the metric in the infrared (IR), feature departures from the usual anti?de Sitter warped extra dimensions. We study the implications of the smooth IR cutoff for Randall-Sundrum- (RS-)type models. We find that the phenomenology of the Kaluza-Klein gravitons (including their masses and couplings) depends sensitively on the precise shape of the warp factor in the IR. In particular, we analyze the warped deformed conifold… more

NK Muon Beam

Description: The NK Muon Beam will be a modified version of the existing NT beam line. The decision to employ a modified version of the NT beam line was made based on considerations of cost and availability of the beam line. Preliminary studies considered use of other beam lines, e.g., the NW beam line, and even of moving the bubble chamber with its superconducting coils but were rejected for reasons such as cost, personnel limitations, and potential conflicts with other users.

A preliminary power consumption estimate for a toroid spoiler magnet proposed for the PWest upgrade

Description: The estimate is based on the preliminary magnet design provided by B. Lundberg. The required magnetic field induction in the winding carrying toroid leg is specified as an initial condition. Based on the cross section areas of the toroid legs the induction in all four toroid legs can be calculated. The particular type of steel which will be used is unknown so they used the curve on Fig. 2 for the most wide spread steels to obtain a field strength in the steel. The number of steel plates and acc… more

RHIC 12x150A current lead temperature controller: design and implementation

Description: There are 60 12 x 150A current leads distributed in six RHIC service buildings; each lead delivers power supply current from room temperature to cryogenic temperature in RHIC. Due to the humid environment, condensation occurs frequently and ice forms quickly during operation, especially during an extensive storage period. These conditions generate warnings and alarms to which personnel must respond and establish temporary solutions to keep the machine operating. In here, we designed a temperatu… more

Particle Distribution Modification by Low Amplitude Modes

Description: Modification of a high energy particle distribution by a spectrum of low amplitude modes is investigated using a guiding center code. Only through resonance are modes effective in modifying the distribution. Diagnostics are used to illustrate the mode-particle interaction and to find which effects are relevant in producing significant resonance, including kinetic Poincare plots and plots showing those orbits with time averaged mode-particle energy transfer. Effects of pitch angle scattering and… more

Groundwater Monitoring Plan for the Hanford Site 216-B-3 Pond RCRA Facility

Description: The 216-B-3 Pond was a series of ponds for disposal of liquid effluent from past Hanford production facilities. In 1990, groundwater monitoring at B Pond was elevated from "detection" to assessment status because total organic halides and total organic carbon were found to exceed critical means in two wells. Groundwater quality assessment, which ended in 1996, failed to find any specific hazardous waste contaminant that could have accounted for the isolated occurrences of elevated total organic… more

Studying neutron-rich 18 N in fusion-evaporation reactions

Description: Light neutron-rich nuclei provide an excellent opportunity to study the changes in nuclear shell structure that occur with increasing neutron number and are an important testing ground for shell model theories. Probably one of the most striking examples of shell modification is the occurrence of intruder ground states, which signal an inversion of the normal shell ordering. Intruder ground states are observed around {sup 32}Mg (Z=10-12), ''the island of inversion'', and in {sup 11}Be. An analog… more
