Passive neutron dosimetry on cruise missile tests

Description: One of the components exercised during development tests of cruise missiles is the neutron generator that supplies the burst of neutrons needed to initiate a nuclear explosion. The subject of this report is a method of verifying the production of neutrons using a passive neutron activation technique that is sufficiently sensitive to detect a decay rate of a few atoms per hour.

Power-cycle studies for a geothermal electric plant for MX operating bases

Description: Binary geothermal plants were investigated for providing electrical power for MX missile bases. A number of pure hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures were evaluated as working fluids for geothermal resource temperatures of 365, 400, and 450/sup 0/F. Cycle thermodynamic analyses were conducted for pure geothermal plants and for two types of coal-geothermal hybrid plants. Cycle performance results were presented as net geofluid effectiveness (net plant output in watts per geofluid flow in 1 bm/h… more

Aeroballistic analysis of ERB/TIGER II Aerodynamic Test Unit ATU-2 (SLA R715032)

Description: The results of the first drop test of the 13.3-in-diameter ERB/TIGER II are documented. The test unit, designated Aerodynamic Test Unit-2 (ATU-2), was dropped on August 25, 1977, at the Sandia National Laboratories Tonopah Test Range from an Air Force F-4 Aircraft. Nominal release conditions were an altitude of 20,000 ft mean sea level and Mach 0.8. The purpose of the test was to obtain free-flight vehicle characteristics including the effect of the free-floating rollerons, to evaluate release … more

System safety management lessons learned

Description: The Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and Acquisition directed the Army Safety Center to provide an audit of the causes of accidents and safety of use restrictions on recently fielded systems by tracking residual hazards back through the acquisition process. The objective was to develop ''lessons learned'' that could be applied to the acquisition process to minimize mishaps in fielded systems. System safety management lessons learned are defined as Ar… more

An overview of radiography in chemical energy warhead research

Description: The high-speed objects and the considerable light, dust, and smoke characteristic of chemical energy warhead test firing necessitate the use of flash radiography as a major diagnostic tool. This paper reviews many of the applications of radiography to chemical warhead studies conducted by many researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Each type of contribution is illustrated by a figure, and the contributors are listed by figure number at the end. The emphasis of the paper is on the relati… more

The Mobile Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (MICBM) simulation

Description: The purpose of this project was to investigate the capability of blending traditional discrete event simulation techniques with artificial intelligence technology. In order to fully demonstrate the capabilities of such a simulation environment, a difficult class of simulation problem was selected for the project: a military C/sup 3/ (command, control, and communication) simulation. The hardware chosen for the project was a Symbolics LISP machine running an artificial intelligence shell called K… more
