The goal for this Phase I project was to develop an industrial model that can perform continuous and efficient dewatering of fine coal slurries of the previous flotation process to fine coal cake of {approx}15% water content from 50-70%. Reverse osmosis performance with solutions containing tri-n-butyl phosphate

Description: Tests were conducted to determine whether the reverse osmosis (RO) units at the F/H Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF) at the Savannah River could be made to process solutions containing tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP). It was desired to test whether operation at a feed pH other than neutral would improve performance. Test results are discussed in this report and indicate that little improvement in the water flux can be expected at other pH values.

Description: Several potential additives and the use of influent pH adjustment were examined to remediated the biofouling problem of the ETF reverse osmosis (RO) system. Tests were conducted with simulated RO feed containing salt, metal hydroxides and bacteria. The addition of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), sodium bisulfite, and adjusting the influent pH to 3 were each successful in reducing the RO biofouling. Current status of dense ceramic membranes for hydrogen separation.

Description: We have developed cermet membranes that nongalvanically separate hydrogen from gas mixtures. The highest measured hydrogen flux was 16.2 cm{sup 3} (STP)/min-cm{sup 2} for an ANL-3a membrane at 900 C. For ANL-3 membranes with thickness of 0.04-0.5 mm, permeation rate is limited by the bulk diffusion of hydrogen through the metal phase. Electrical Simulation of Diaphragm Feed Pump System

Description: The electical analog study of the diaphragm feed pump system resulted in changes to the system which have improved the over-all operation and reliability of the pumps. Superconducting High Energy Resolution Gamma-ray Spectrometers

Description: We have demonstrated that a bulk absorber coupled to a TES can serve as a good gamma-ray spectrometer.
