Physical-Chemical Treatment of Tar Sand Processing Wastewater: [Final Report, Tasks 3-5]

Description: The dewatering properties of residuals generated by flotation/foam fractionation treatment of TS-1S wastewater were evaluated. The leachate potential was studied for both chemical coagulation and flotation/foam fractionation sludges. Experimental evaluation of the steady state and dynamic performance characteristics of the interactive units of a coal gasification process. Quarterly report, 27 December 1982-3 April 1983

Description: A Test Plan Report has been prepared which details all the tests proposed for the 1983 operational season. One of these tests evaluates the thermal recycle mode which would be employed in a commercial configuration. In this mode, the condensate stream en route to the resaturator is passed back to the first gas cooler. The gas to liquid heat exchanger heats the condensate prior to resaturation. The analytical system simulation model, developed under this program, has been used to assess the oper… more

Annual environmental monitoring report, January-December 1982

Description: Environmental monitoring results continue to demonstrate that environmental radiological impact due to SLAC operation is not distinguishable from natural environmental sources. During 1982, the maximum measured neutron dose near the site boundary was not distinguishable from the cosmic ray neutron background. There have been no measurable increases in radioactivity in ground water attributable to SLAC operations since operation began in 1966. Airborne radioactivity released from SLAC continues … more

Ground-water surveillance at the Hanford Site for CY 1982

Description: Operations at the Hanford Site since 1944 have resulted in the discharge of large volumes of process cooling water and other waste waters to the ground. These effluents, which have reached the unconfined ground water, contain low levels of radioactive and chemical substances. The movement of these constituents in the unconfined ground water is monitored as part of the Ground-Water Surveillance Program. During 1982, 324 monitoring wells were sampled at various times for radioactive and chemical … more

Identification and separation of the organic compounds in coal-gasification condensate waters. [5,5 dimethyl hydantoin, dihydroxy benzenes, acetonitrile]

Description: A substantial fraction of the organic solutes in condensate waters from low-temperature coal-gasification processes are not identified by commonly employed analytical techniques, have low distriution coefficients (K/sub C/) into diisopropyl ether (DIPE) or methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), and are resistant to biological oxidation. These compounds represent an important wastewater-treatment problem. Analytical techniques were developed to detect these polar compounds, and the liquid-liquid phase e… more

Lysimeter study of commercial reactor waste forms: waste form acquisition characterization and full-scale leaching

Description: This report describes work conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) as part of a joint program with Savannah River Laboratory. Typical full-scale (55-gallon drum size) waste forms were acquired by BNL from a boiling water reactor (BWR) and a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Liquid waste stream activity concentrations were analyzed by gamma spectroscopy. This information was used to determine the waste from activity inventory, providing the necessary source term for lysimeter and leachi… more

Evaluation of effects of phenol recovery on biooxidation and tertiary treatment of SRC-I wastewater. Final technical report

Description: Addition of phenol recovery to the wastewater treatment scheme in the Baseline Design for the SRC-I Demonstration Plant was evaluated as a major post-Baseline effort. Phenol recovery affects many downstream processes, but this study was designed to assess primarily its effects on biooxidation and subsequent tertiary treatment. Two parallel treatment schemes were set up, one to treat dephenolated wastewaters and the other for processed nondephenolated wastewaters, a simulation of the Baseline De… more

DEVELOPMENT OF A SLURRY-FED IN-CAN MELTER FOR NUCLEAR DEFENSE WASTE

Description: The Savannah River Plant (SRP) has about 30 million gallons of high-level, radioactive, liquid waste stored in large waste tanks. This waste is a by-product of the production of nuclear defense materials at SRP. Plans are to build the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) at SRP to convert this waste into solid form. A key step in the planned DWPF process is the vitrification or glassmaking step, in which the radionuclides are incorporated in borosilicate glass. Two types of glass melters ha… more

Treatment of biomass gasification wastewater using a combined wet air oxidation/activated sludge process

Description: A lab-scale treatability study for using thermal and biological oxidation to treat a biomass gasification wastewater (BGW) having a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 46,000 mg/l is described. Wet air oxidation (WA0) at 300/sup 0/C and 13.8 MPa (2000 psi) was used to initially treat the BGW and resulted in a COD reduction of 74%. This was followed by conventional activated sludge treatment using operating conditions typical of municipal sewage treatment plants. This resulted in an additional 95% C… more

Geothermal injection monitoring with dc resistivity methods

Description: Injection into an idealized geothermal reservoir is considered, assuming that the injected water differs in temperature and salinity from in-place fluids. Changes in formation resistivity resulting from temperature and salinity variations are evaluated, and numerical simulation methods are used to predict effects which would be observed by means of dc resistivity monitoring. The resistivity calculations were performed using a three-dimensional computer code to simulate results from two differen… more
