Chemistry of coal-related microparticles

Description: This research project involves the study of coal macerals and sorbent microparticles used to remove S0{sub 2} and/or H{sub 2}S from process streams. To measure reaction rates a charged single microparticle will be held electrodynamically in one or more laser beams by superposed ac and dc electrical fields. The use of the electrodynamic balance for microparticle studies was pioneered by one of the principal investigators. One of the laser beams is used for light-scattering measurements to determ… more

Tritium removal from contaminated water via infrared laser multiple-photon dissociation

Description: Isotope separation by means of infrared-laser multiple-photon dissociation offers an efficient way to recover tritium from contaminated light or heavy water found in fission and fusion reactors. For tritium recovery from heavy water, chemical exchange of tritium into deuterated chloroform is followed by selective laser dissociation of tritiated chloroform and removal of the tritiated photoproduct, TCl. The single-step separation factor is at least 2700 and is probably greater than 5000. Here we… more

Multiphoton dissociation and thermal unimolecular reactions induced by infrared lasers. [REAMPA code]

Description: Multiphoton dissociation (MPD) of ethyl chloride was studied using a tunable 3.3 ..mu..m laser to excite CH stretches. The absorbed energy increases almost linearly with fluence, while for 10 ..mu..m excitation there is substantial saturation. Much higher dissociation yields were observed for 3.3 ..mu..m excitation than for 10 ..mu..m excitation, reflecting bottlenecking in the discrete region of 10 ..mu..m excitation. The resonant nature of the excitation allows the rate equations description … more

Surface analyses and modelling of rate multiplicity and instabilities

Description: Catalytic partial and complete oxidations of chemical species are a quite important class of reactions in the production of many commercial chemicals and in the elimination of environmental pollutants. This research focuses on a sub-class of oxidation reactions in which CO is a key player -- be it a reactant, intermediate, or product -- in the catalytic sequence and chemistry. The first three years of our research has followed two parallel paths which have a common destination and which togethe… more

Research program in theoretical high-energy physics. Progress report. [Summaries of research activities at Brown Univ]

Description: Last year's research program dealt with a large range of topics in high energy theoretical physics. Included in the problems studied were: flavor mixing angles in flavor gauge theory; grand unification schemes; neutral current phenomenology; charmonium decays; perturbative aspects of soft hadronic phenomena within the framework of the dual topological expansion; Regge trajectory slopes and the shape of the inclusive spectra; bound states in quantum electrodynamics; calculations of the Lamb Shif… more
