Environmental Geochemical Studies of Selected Mineral Deposits in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Description: From abstract: Environmental geochemical investigations took place in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST), Alaska, between 1994 and 1997. Areas studied include the historic Kennecott stratabound copper mines and mill area; the historic mines and mill in the Bremner district, where gold was produced from polymetallic veins; the sporadically active gold placer mines at Gold Hill; the undisturbed, unmined porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits at Orange Hill and Bond Creek; and the h… more

Geochemistry of Mariano Lake-Lake Valley Cores, McKinley County, New Mexico

Description: From abstract: The primary goal of the U.S. Geological Survey-Bureau of Indian Affairs drilling project in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation in McKinley County, New Mexico, was to better understand the relationship between host-rock stratigraphy and uranium mineralization. As part of this project, geochemical studies of approximately 280 samples from 8 cores and 1 outcrop were undertaken; samples from 4 of the cores show uranium enrichment. Geochemical relationships between samples of weath… more

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks

Description: Abstract: "A procedure for the determination of thorium in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10 parts per million ThO2 in felsic or mafic rocks. Thorium is extracted by mesityl oxide and purified by iodate precipitation from nitric acid medium containing tartaric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The thorium is determined spectrophotometrically with thoron from meso-tartaric acid medium."

Volumetric Determination of Uranium Using Titanous Sulfate as Reductant Before Oxidimetric Titration

Description: The following report discusses a method for determining uranium in samples containing 0.05 percent or more U3O8, using titanous sulfate as reducing agent, that's much shorter, faster, and has fewer interferences than conventional methods using reductor columns.

An Automatic Micromuffle for the Determination of Ash in Carbonaceous Material

Description: Abstract: An automatic micromuffle for the determination of the ash content of small samples of carbonaceous material is comprised of a furnace of the radiant-heating type with a direct reading pyrometer for temperature control. This furnace can be assembled with a minimum of labor using parts available from scientific laboratory apparatus companies.

Distribution of Elements in the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation in the Jo Dandy Area, Montrose County, Colorado

Description: The following report covers a chemical study that was made of the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation of Jurassic age in the Jo Dandy area, Montrose County, Colorado in 1954. The chemical study was made to investigate the distribution of elements in the host rocks with emphasis on the pattern of variation as related to the position of known ore bodies, and to determine average concentrations of some of the elements in the major rock types.

Geochemistry of Beryllium

Description: From abstract: This is a review, with annotated bibliography, of the mode of occurrence of the element beryllium. It is not a list of specific ore deposits, but a summary of the types of the types of minerals and rocks in which beryllium has been reported to occur. In addition, the unpublished spectrographic studies of the Geological Survey on mill products are summarized, and data are given on domestic production and reserves and on foreign production.

Semiquantitative Spectrographic Analysis and Rank Correlation in Geochemistry

Description: Abstract: "The rank coefficient, rs, which involves less computation than the product moment correlation coefficient, r, can be used to indicate the degree of relationship between two elements. The method is applicable in situations where the assumptions underlying normal distribution correlation theory may not be satisfied. Semiquantitative spectrographic analyses can be used to calculate rank correlations between elements because the results are already partly ranked in an analytical report."
