Description:
Americium-241 used as a radiation source in a field instrument for measuring coal concentrations in mine dust presents a contamination hazard if the instrument is damaged. Alternative source designs based on /sup 85/Kr were developed and evaluated. Krypton-85 beta particles were used to excite x-rays from a target and the x-rays were used in place of the /sup 241/Am gamma radiation.
