Development of Evaluation Techniques for Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems: Final Report

Description: The development of standardized techniques for the comparative evaluation of electric vehicle battery technologies is summarized. The methodology considers both the traditional measures of battery performance (energy density, energy storage costs, and cycle life) and the equally important usage related battery characteristics (probability of technical success, operating and maintenance parameters, and safety/environmental impact). This comparative rationale is supplemented by the ability to gen… more

Effects of voltage control in utility interactive dispersed storage and generation systems

Description: When a small generator is connected to the distribution system, the voltage at the point of interconnection is determined largely by the system and not the generator. This report examines the effect on the generator, on the load voltage and on the distribution system of a number of different voltage control strategies in the generator. Synchronous generators with three kinds of exciter control are considered, as well as induction generators and dc/ac inverters, with and without capacitor compen… more

Response of variable impedance stripline to pulse excitation

Description: We describe a simple method to predict the transient response of variable impedance stripline to pulse excitation. The method uses a finite difference based, quasi-static impedance formulation to calculate the reflection coefficient at each point along the direction of pulse propagation and the subsequent short pulse behavior of a variable impedance structure. A Fortran computer program is written to determine the quasi-static impedance. Excellent agreement of better than 1% between the finite … more

Thermal energy storage market-oriented background paper

Description: Thermal energy storage (TES) technologies and their applications are discussed. The markets and commercialization status and potential are explored. ERDA TES program plans are presented. It is concluded that the only TES systems ready for immediate commercialization are storage water heating and space heating charged with off-peak electricity. All that is needed for commercialization to occur is the introduction of appropriate split electricity rates or load management contracts. In the near-te… more

Development of a practical photochemical energy storage system. Quarterly report

Description: A study of a series of copper(I) compounds which contain a strongly absorbing chromophore (e.g., CuBr(PPh/sub 3/)-(2,2'-bipyridine)) for use as sensitizers in photochemical energy storage systems is described. The generally low sensitization efficiencies of these compounds preclude their use as sensitizers in a practical photochemical energy storage system. Nevertheless, some interesting mechanistic information has emerged from this study, the full details of which are being written for publica… more

High-explosive-driven delay line pulse generator

Description: The inclusion of a delay line circuit into the design of a high-explosive-driven generator shortens the time constant of the output pulse. After a brief review of generator concepts and previously described pulse-shortening methods, a geometry is presented which incorporates delay line circuit techcniques into a coil generator. The circuit constants are adjusted to match the velocity of the generated electromagnetic wave to the detonation velocity of the high explosive. The proposed generator c… more

Advanced subsystems development. Second semi-annual progress report, April 1--October 1, 1978

Description: The concept design for a small (less than 10 MWe) solar thermal electric generating plant was completed using projected 1985 technology. The systems requirements were defined and specified. The components, including an engineering prototype for one 15 kWe module of the generating plant, were conceptually designed. Significant features of the small solar thermal power plant were identified as the following: (1) 15-kWe Stirling-cycle engine/alternator with constant power output; (2) 10-meter poin… more

Development of a practical photochemical energy storage system. Annual report, June 15, 1976--June 14, 1977. [Interconversion between norbornadiene and quadricyclene for thermochemical heat storage]

Description: Significant progress toward the development of a solar energy storage system based on the norbornadiene-quadricyclene interconversion has been achieved during the past year. New sensitizers and catalysts have been discovered and conditions found where single cycles of the photosensitization step and the catalytic reversion step appear to be quantitative. Both sensitizers and catalysts have been successfully incorporated onto insoluble polymeric supports. The long term stability of these compone… more

Development of a practical photochemical energy storage system. Quarterly report

Description: The emphasis of work during this past quarter has been on improvement of the performance of immobilized photosensitizers. Prolonged use of Polymer N in the recycling prototype has resulted in gradual deterioration of the behavior of this photosensitizer. Furthermore the opacity of the beads results in an inherent 20% loss in efficiency apparently through light reflection. In an attempt to improve the characteristics with respect to these points considerable effort was devoted in the synthetic g… more
