Addendum 3 to CSAR 80-027, Use of calorimeter 109B for fissile material measurement

Description: This modification to the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) calorimeter system involves removing current calorimeter No. 3 from the water bath and replacing it with a calorimeter that can accommodate larger diameter items (an oversize can). The inside diameters of both the sample and the reference cells will be increased to 5.835 inches at the top opening and to 5.22 inches at the bottom, the 8 inch high measurement zone. This Addendum 3 to Criticality Safety Analysis Report 80-027 examines critic… more

Theoretical studies of flowrates from slimholes and production-size geothermal wells

Description: The relationship between production rates of large diameter geothermal production wells, and slimholes, is studied. The analysis is based on wells completed in liquid-dominated geothermal fields, where flashing occurs either in the wellbore or at the surface. Effects of drawdown in the reservoir, and pressure drop in the wellbore, are included; heat losses from the wellbore to the formation are not presently included in our analysis. The study concentrates on the influence of well diameter on p… more

The effect of irradiation on the stability and properties of monolithic silicon carbide and SiC{sub f}/SiC composites up to 25 dpa

Description: Stability and properties of monolithic and SiC{sub f}/SiC composites were measured before and after irradiation in a fast neutron spectrum up to 25 dpa between 500 and 1500C. Dimensional changes were relatively consistent with previous investigations. Strength and modulus of SiC{sub f}/SiC composites decreased after irradiation as a result of fiber/matrix decoupling. For some composites, uniform elongation was not significantly degraded by irradiation. Thermal conductivity also decreased after … more

Impact of access port diameter on the long reach manipulator design

Description: Many of the single shell storage tanks (SSTs) on the Hanford site appear to have central 42-in. risers which could be used as access ports for the Long Reach Manipulator (LRM). However, about half of the tanks are known to not have a central 42-in. riser and it has recently been discovered that of the tanks whose drawings indicate central 42-in. risers, the majority have been plugged, sealed, or taper down to a much smaller diameter at ground level. Thus, it can be assumed that a central access… more

Compatibility of Refrigerants and Lubricants With Elastomers. Final Report

Description: The information contained in this report is designed to assist the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry in the selection of suitable elastomeric gasket and seal materials that will prove useful in various refrigerant and refrigeration lubricant environments. In part I of the program the swell behavior in the test fluids has been determined using weight and in situ diameter measurements for the refrigerants and weight, diameter and thickness measurements for the lubricants. Weight and dia… more

Status Report A Review of Slimhole Drilling

Description: This 1994 report reviews the various applications of slimhole technology including for exploration in remote areas, low-cost development wells, reentering existing wells, and horizontal and multilateral drilling. Advantages of slimholes to regular holes are presented. Limitations and disadvantages of slimholes are also discussed. In 1994, slimhole drilling was still an ongoing development technology. Needs assessment activity report

Description: As part of a Transportation Management Division task (TMD), the Packaging Programs and Testing Group within Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) has assessed the packaging needs of some of the mid- and small-sized US Department of Energy (DOE) sites by visiting them and meeting with their transportation and packaging personnel. To date, ten DOE facilities have been visited. As a result, these sites have been informed of some of the packaging activities that TMD has sponsored and is sponsoring, ha… more

D0 Solenoid Chimney Routing Clearances

Description: This engineering note contains information about the measured clearances along the chimney route from the solenoid to the control dewar. This type of information is best conveyed by sketches and a few photos. Twelve photos taken on 2/17/94 are included which gIVe perspective views along the path. The detector was parked in the collision hall on this date. The CF iron was split open to the east and the South EF iron was rolled back. Also the South EndCap Calorimeter was rolled to the south on th… more

Interim report on the post irradiation examination of capsules 2 and 3 of the HFR-B1 experiment

Description: This is an interim report on the post irradiation examination (PIE) of capsules 2 and 3 of the HFR-B1 experiment The PIE has been conducted by the Forschungszentrum Juelich and is nearing completion. After disassembly of the capsules, the examination focused on capsule components including fuel compacts, inert compacts fired in different media, graphite cylinders of different grades, unbonded coated fuel particles and unfueled graphite; in addition, heating experiments with intermittent injecti… more

The implications of tolerance system interpretation on past and present dimensional variability studies

Description: Dimensional variability studies and published dimensional variability standards have been used by the foundry industry for years as an indicator of the casting process` ability to produce uniform parts. These studies are an extremely useful tool in the continuous ``dimensional dialogue`` between foundries and customers. The nature of these studies, and of the current tolerancing systems used by casting designers, leaves room for some misinterpretation and misuse of these study results. This pap… more

Dimensional variability of production steel castings

Description: Work is ongoing to characterize the dimensional variability of steel casting features. Data are being collected from castings produced at representative Steel Founders` Society of America foundries. Initial results based on more than 12,500 production casting feature measurements are presented for carbon and low alloy steel castings produced in green sand, no-bake, and shell molds. A comprehensive database of casting, pattern, and feature variables has been developed so that the influence of th… more

Calorimetry at 0{degree} in RHIC: Some issues in the choice of detector technology

Description: The authors discuss briefly the case for a zero degree calorimeter at RHIC and space constraints on such a device. Two GEANT simulations of quartz fiber calorimeters are then studied and compared to the corresponding case of scintillator sampling. The authors find that the Q-cal calorimeter does provide some improvement in response uniformity near the calorimeter edge to hadronic showers (due to the filtering out of wide angle shower products). This may be an advantage when space is limited and… more

Characterization of CdZnTe ambient temperature detectors

Description: A great deal of interest has been generated in the use of cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) detectors for ambient temperature detection of radionuclides. The addition of zinc to CdTe provides several benefits that enhance the materials operational characteristics at ambient temperature. Recent movement in the industry is to produce larger volume detectors using CdZnTe without much known about the effects of larger geometry on performance. The purpose of this study is … more
