Hallam Nuclear Power Facility Preoperational Test Completion Report Dry Criticality

Description: A dry criticality test was carried out to determine the minimum critical mass of the HNPF Core without sodium. A subcritical calibration of the central control rod was performed and the relative reactivity worths of the inner ring of six control rods were determined. The extrapolated critical loading for the various plots after each incremental fuel loading with all rods out is shown. A tabulation is presented of multiplication data taken throughout the dry critical test. In order to find the r… more

Rapid pressure swing absorption cleanup of post-shift reactor synthesis gas

Description: This investigation is concerned with the separation of gas mixtures using a novel concept of rapid pressure swing absorption (RAPSAB) of gas in a stationary absorbent liquid through gas-liquid interfaces immobilized in the pore mouths of hydrophobic microporous membranes. The process is implemented in a module well-packed with hydrophobic microporous hollow fiber membranes. Before we proceed to RAPSAB studies with reactive absorbents, it is necessary to make an effort to compare experimental re… more

U. S. energy flow in 1976

Description: An energy flow diagram for the U.S. for 1976 is presented, and one for 1975 is included for comparison. Some significant differences between 1975 and 1976 are: total energy use increased 4.8 percent, almost reaching the record use of 1973; oil imports increased significantly to 15.5 quads, more than 20 percent above 1975, and almost 44 percent of our total oil use; coal and natural gas remained more or less constant; by the author's reckoning, the industrial sector was unique in that its energy… more

Size Dependence of a Temperature-Induced Solid-Solid Phase Transition in Copper(I) Sulfide

Description: Determination of the phase diagrams for the nanocrystalline forms of materials is crucial for our understanding of nanostructures and the design of functional materials using nanoscale building blocks. The ability to study such transformations in nanomaterials with controlled shape offers further insight into transition mechanisms and the influence of particular facets. Here we present an investigation of the size-dependent, temperature-induced solid-solid phase transition in copper sulfide nan… more

C-616 UF$sub 6$ HYDROLYSIS FUMES

Description: Experiments were carried out to determine how fast the concentration of suspended material decreases in fumes produced by the hydrolysis of UF/sub 6/ vapor in damp air. The rate of aggregation is a function chiefly of the number of particles per unit gas volume, but depends also on the chemical composition, size and shape of the particles, the temperature and pressure, and the degree of agitation. The rate of settling depends on the weight and shape of the particles and the viscosity of the gas… more

RADIOACTIVE WASTE ECONOMICS: OPTIMUM STORAGE TIME PRIOR TO SHIPPING TO DISPOSAL SITE

Description: The economics of waste disposal by pit storage when the geological location of the pits does not coincide with the location of the processing plant are considered. Optimum cooling times before shipment were determined for 250gallon batches of Purex-type waste. Three distances between processing and disposal sites, and three unit storage costs were considered. It was concluded that as the storage cost increases it becomes economical to ship shorter-cooled waste, and as the shipping distance incr… more

Heavy ion clusters in the TDHF approximation. [112 to 384 MeV, cross sections]

Description: The time-dependent Hartree-Fock method is used to produce time dependent graphical representations of the density contours of the binary cluster in the reactions /sup 14/N(112 MeV) + /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O(384 MeV) + /sup 16/O, and /sup 20/Ne(164 MeV) + /sup 58/Ni. Alpha clustering and multipole shape vibrations are seen. LATTICE QCD AT FINITE TEMPERATURE AND DENSITY.

Description: With the operation of the RHIC heavy ion program, the theoretical understanding of QCD at finite temperature and density has become increasingly important. Though QCD at finite temperature has been extensively studied using lattice Monte-Carlo simulations over the past twenty years, most physical questions relevant for RHIC (and future) heavy ion experiments remain open. In lattice QCD at finite temperature and density there have been at least two major advances in recent years. First, for the … more

Using Neural Networks to Describe Complex Phase Transformation Behavior

Description: Final microstructures can often be the end result of a complex sequence of phase transformations. Fundamental analyses may be used to model various stages of the overall behavior but they are often impractical or cumbersome when considering multicomponent systems covering a wide range of compositions. Neural network analysis may be a useful alternative method of identifying and describing phase transformation beavior. A neural network model for ferrite prediction in stainless steel welds is des… more

Effect of partially reacting Nb{sub 3}Sn before magnet winding on the strand critical current

Description: Nb{sub 3}Sn is currently the material most commonly foreseen for the development of high field superconducting magnets. This is done by either the wind and react technique, usually used for compact magnets like accelerator magnets, or the react and wind technique, more common on large scale magnets. In both cases, a thorough understanding of the Cu-Sn system diffusion and phase formation processes is necessary to optimize the Nb{sub 3}Sn reaction cycle. Attention has to be paid to both the supe… more

THE DETERMINATION OF NIOBIUM IN URANIUM-NIOBIUM ALLOYS

Description: Niobium is determined as the peroxy complex in concentrated sulfuric acid by photometric measurement at 360 m mu . Uranium interference is cancelled by using a solution of the sample for reference in the photometric measurement. The method covers the determination of niobium in uranium --niobium alloys made from pure melting stock. Molybdenum interferes and must be removed if present. Zirconium does not interfere. The calibration curve covers a concentration range from 0.2 to 5.0 mg. (auth)
