Summary report of soil removal preliminary excavations. (Report No. ES-389-75-171)

Description: A proposed technique to remove small areas, <2,000 m/sup 2/, of contaminated soil is discussed along with the results of an actual excavation. Based on the results of a trial excavation in uncontaminated soil and an excavation of two trenches in contaminated soil, it is concluded that the techniques described are a satisfactory means of contaminated soil removal. It can be done safely with a release of airborne plutonium a factor of 10 or more below the Environmental Protection Administratio… more

Experimental studies of zirconium/aluminum getter pumps

Description: Getters of the type to be utilized as tritium pumps in the foreline of the TFTR torus vacuum system, and presumably in those of the neutral beam injector arms, were evaluated using hydrogen and deuterium. The capacity and speed as rated by the manufacturer (SAES) are found to be conservative. In addition, the getters are shown to continue to pump hydrogen even in the presence of chemically active, impurity gases, provided the getter temperature is maintained at >300/sup 0/C. Since hydrogen pump… more

Studies of the permeation and diffusion of tritium and hydrogen in TFTR

Description: This report documents the main features of studies conducted on the permeation and diffusion of tritium and hydrogen through the stainless steel sections comprising the vacuum vessel of TFTR. The overall conclusion of these studies is that tritium releases to the environment resulting from TFTR operations under normal conditions will be very small, less than one curie per year. A basis is described for predicting the magnitudes of the applicable transport properties for tritium-austenitic stain… more

Decay Properties of p pi- Systems Produced in Neutron Dissociation at Fermilab Energies

Description: The authors have examined the decay distributions of (p{pi}{sup -}) systems produced in the reaction n + p {yields} (p{pi}{sup -}) + p for neutron momenta between 120 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c. Preliminary analysis of decay moments indicates the presence of large helicity-flip amplitudes even for small (p{pi}{sup -}) mass values, and does not support the hypothesis that the helicity non-flip (p{pi}{sup -}) states are produced peripherally in impact parameter. These results are in approximate agreemen… more

Forbidden coupling and inhibited decay: a study of disconnection

Description: An attempt is made to correlate deviation from ideal mixing mass formula, high energy scattering behavior, and violation of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule. Pole or cut nature of the intermediary is discussed. Timelike and spacelike forbidden communications are compared. Off-shell effects are examined. Some problems for phenomenology are revealed.

Compilation of yields from neutron-induced fission of /sup 232/Th, /sup 235/U, /sup 236/U, /sup 237/Np, /sup 238/U, and /sup 239/Pu measured radiochemically at Los Alamos

Description: Radiochemically measured relative fission yields have been compiled for targets of /sup 232/Th, /sup 235/U, /sup 236/U, /sup 237/Np, /sup 238/U, and /sup 239/Pu that were irradiated with neutrons, the average energies of which were in the 0.0253-eV to 14-MeV range. The yields were examined for consistency by means of the two-mode-of-fission hypothesis. The circumstances associated with inconsistencies were investigated, but the yields in questions were rejected only when good cause was found. F… more

Description: Evaluation of the gross beta (..beta../sub t/), tritium (/sup 3/H), and nitrate (NO/sub 3//sup -/) concentrations in groundwater sampled from near the surface of the unconfined groundwater system during 1975 indicates that zones of contamination extend in an easterly and southeasterly direction from the 200-E Area, as has been observed in the past. Tritium and NO/sub 3//sup -/ ion concentrations above background levels continue to be observed along the Columbia River in the vicinity of the 100 … more

Technical progress report, October 1, 1974--September 30, 1975. [Dept. of Physics, Univ. of Wisconsin]

Description: The study of the scattering of polarized deuterons yielded improved optical potentials, particularly spin--orbit and tensor potentials. Extensive measurements of vector and tensor analyzing powers for (d,p), (d,n), and (d,t) reactions corrected several J/sup ..pi../ assignments, revealed deficiencies in DWBA calculations, showed some interesting systematics, gave evidence for two-step processes, and demonstrated important deuteron D-state effects. New vector and tensor polarimeters permitted ro… more

Determination of the pr of laser fusion targets using the. cap alpha. -particle TOF technique

Description: A computer code was written to describe the alpha particle energy loss. The problem of a symmetric compression of the DT gas by an exploding microsphere is analyzed. The code calculates the energy spectrum of a Gaussian distribution of alpha particles after passing through the compressed gas and the exploded glass. The calculations are being used to determine design parameters for diagnostic instruments for measuring charged particle energy distributions from laser fusion targets. (MOW)

Effects of fill pressure and pulse simultaneity on the laser driven implosion of dt filled glass microshells

Description: This paper discusses a series of experiments performed with the LLL two-beam laser system, JANUS. The JANUS laser is capable of focusing approximately 500 Gigawatts of 1.06 ..mu.. power (40 J in 80 psec) on laser fusion type targets. In these experiments, the targets were deuterium tritium (DT) filled glass microshells with aspect ratios of 100 to 200. Targets of this type operate in what is commonly called the exploding pusher mode. The result is that the glass shell surrounding the DT gas (th… more

Indocyanine green labeled with /sup 123/I for dynamic studies of the hepato-biliary system. [/sup 131/I, /sup 125/I]

Description: This report summarizes the results to develop an iodine-123 labeled agent for dynamic studies of the hepato-biliary system. Iodine-123 is an ideal nuclide for radiopharmaceuticals, because of its short half-life (T/sub /sup 1///sub 2// = 13.3 hr); its decay with a high abundance (83%) of 159 keV photons; and the reduced patient radiation exposure (a factor of 100 less than iodine-131). Indocyanine green, a tricarbanocyanine dye, was introduced by Heseltine and co-workers in 1956, has several ch… more
