Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl and bis(trimethylsilyl)amido complexes of the di- and trivalent lanthanides

Description: The reaction of the divalent iodides YbI/sub 2/ and EuI/sub 2/ with NaN(SiMe/sub 3/)/sub 2/ has provided pentane-soluble, monomeric derivatives of the divalent lanthanides. These compounds are isolated as the solvated species Eu(N(SiMe/sub 3/)/sub 2/)/sub 2/L/sub 2/ (L = thf or 1,2-dme), Yb(N(SiMe/sub 3/)/sub 2/)/sub 2/(thf)/sub 1/ /sub 5/ and Yb(N(SiMe/sub 3/)/sub 2/)/sub 2/L/sub 2/ (L = 1,2-dme or OEt/sub 2/), or as the sodium salts NaM(N(SiMe/sub 3/)/sub 2/)/sub 3/ (M = Eu or Yb). The pentam… more

Crystallography of lath martensite and stabilization of retained austenite

Description: TEM was used to study the morphology and crystallography of lath martensite in low and medium carbon steels in the as-quenched and 200/sup 0/C tempered conditions. The steels have microduplex structures of dislocated lath martensite and continuous thin films of retained austenite at the lath interfaces. Stacks of laths form the packets which are derived from different (111) variants of the same austenite grain. The residual parent austenite enables microdiffraction experiments with small electr… more

LEED crystallography studies of the structure of clean and adsorbate-covered Ir, Pt and Rh crystal surfaces

Description: There have only been a few Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) intensity analyses carried out to determine the structure of molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces; most surface crystallography studies concentrated on the structure of clean unreconstructed or atomic adsorbate-covered transition metal faces. The few molecular adsorption systems already investigated by dynamical LEED are CO on Ni(100), Cu(100) and Pd(100) as well as C/sub 2/H/sub 2/ and C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ adsorbed on Pt(111). The e… more

Multilayer relaxation in metallic surfaces as demonstrated by LEED analysis

Description: Theoretical motivations are reviewed for investigation of multilayer relaxation in relatively simple metallic surfaces. Results from LEED analyses are presented which serve to demonstrate that multilayer relaxation measurably exists in Cu(100) and Cu(110) surfaces. The results from two independent LEED analyses for Cu(110) are shown to be in much better agreement with each other than the LEED results are with multilayer relaxation results obtained by high energy ion scattering. Multilayer relax… more

Data processing in neutron protein crystallography using position-sensitive detectors

Description: Neutrons provide a unique probe for localizing hydrogen atoms and for distinguishing hydrogen from deuterons. Hydrogen atoms largely determine the three-dimensional structure of proteins and are responsible for many catalytic reactions. The study of hydrogen bonding and hydrogen exchange will therefore give insight into reaction mechanisms and conformational fluctuations. In addition, neutrons provide the ability to distinguish N from C and O and to allow correct orientation of groups such as h… more
