Recovery of cesium, technetium, rhodium and palladium from stored waste supernates

Description: The results of our assessment of the processing methods and costs for the recovery of cesium, techneium, rhodium, and palladium from aged waste supernates are presented. Guidelines for the assessment of costs are given. Cesium can be readily absorbed from alkaline waste supernates without prior treatment using Linde AW-500, a synthetic zolite. Technetium, present in the supernate as the pertechnetate anion, together with rhodium and palladium, probably present as anionic nitrite complexes, can … more

Sample calculation -- GVR values for determining tritium separations costs

Description: This paper shows the calculations for the Gas Volume Ratio, defined as the Total Gas Volume/Target Volume. Using 20 tons of LiAlO{sub 2} as the target, 5028 cubic feet of tritium, protium, and helium are produced. The target volume equals 312.5 cubic feet of aluminate, so that the GVR = 5028/312.5 = 16.1.

Feasibility Study for Perimeter Inspection of Shutdown Production Reactors

Description: In fulfillment of a request by the Atomic Energy Commission, an inspection system was developed by the Hanford Atomic Products Operation of General Electric Company during 1964 for periodic monitoring of production reactors should they be shut down under international agreement. Ground rules included access to the reactor building and to the reactor core itself for installation, checking, and removal of equipment for determining whether or not the reactor had been operated between periodic insp… more

Oralloy cost for production reactor fuel use

Description: A study of relative plutonium and orallay values is being made by representatives of the production sites under direction of AEC Headquarters. Division of Production. (Oralloy is uranium enriched to 93-15 percent U-235.) Under study assumptions that will be detailed later, oralloy would cost less than formerly, and may be cheap enough to enrich production reactor discharged uranium to reactor input assays. To date uranium recycle enriching assays have been held below two percent U-235 -- usuall… more
