Coolant Mixing in Sodium Cooled Fast Reactor Fuel Bundles.

Description: Radial subchannel temperature imbalances can be quite severe in typical fast reactor designs of tight pitch to diameter ratios. Consideration of mixing between interconnected subchannels is required to avoid the significant design penalties which would otherwise would be imposed. The available experimental data and analytic methods for predicting coolant mixing are presented and their deficiencies relative to sodium cooled fast reactor application discussed. Sodium conduction effects, subchanne… more

Ecological studies on the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) on the Savannah River Plant

Description: The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is the largest vertebrate of the Savannah River Plant (SRP), reaching a maximum length of 3.7 meters (12 feet) and weighing up to 175 kg (385 pounds). Currently, populations in coastal South Carolina are considered Threatened, whereas populations in inland areas (such as the SRP) are still Endangered. Because of their legal status and economic and ecological importance, it is important to determine the environmental impacts of SRP operations o… more

Hanford waste disposal summary, 1968

Description: This is the second summary report of Hanford waste disposal experience. The data was tabulated from reports submitted by the contractors to the Richland Office of the Atomic Energy Commission. For a detailed description of Hanford waste management practices and plans the reader is directed to Hanford Waste Management Plans. There were no instances where rates of release exceeded applicable release guides and generally release rates were less than 10% of RL Appendix 0510 guides. There was a gene… more

User's manual for computer code SOLTES-1 (simulator of large thermal energy systems). [For CDC 6600]

Description: SOLTES simulates the steady-state response of thermal energy systems to time-varying data such as weather and loads. Thermal energy system models of both simple and complex systems can easily be modularly constructed from a library of routines. These routines mathematically model solar collectors, pumps, switches, thermal energy storage, thermal boilers, auxiliary boilers, heat exchangers, extraction turbines, extraction turbine/generators, condensers, regenerative heaters, air conditioners, he… more

Assessment of generic solar thermal systems for large power applications: analysis of electric power generating costs for systems larger than 10 MWe

Description: Seven generic types of collectors, together with associated subsystems for electric power generation, were considered. The collectors can be classified into three categories: (1) two-axis tracking (with compound-curvature reflecting surfaces); (2) one-axis tracking (with single-curvature reflecting surfaces); and (3) nontracking (with low-concentration reflecting surfaces). All seven collectors were analyzed in conceptual system configurations with Rankine-cycle engines. In addition, two of the… more

Total Energy Recovery System for Agribusiness: Lake County study. Final report

Description: A brief summary is given of the results of a previously reported study designed to evaluate the costs and viability of combined thermodynamic and biologic cycles in a system known as the Total Energy Recovery System for Agribusiness (TERSA). This conceptual system involved the combined geothermally assisted activities of greenhouse crop and mushroom growing, fish farming, and biogas generation in an integrated biologic system such that the waste or by-products of each subsystem cycle were recov… more

Thulium heat source IR D Project 91-031

Description: The goal of the Thulium Heat Source study is to determine the performance capability and evaluate the safety and environmental aspects of a thulium-170 heat source. Thulium-170 has several attractive features, including the fact that it decays to a stable, chemically innocuous isotope in a relatively short time. A longer-range goal is to attract government funding for the development, fabrication, and demonstration testing in an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) of one or more thulium isotope… more

Geothermal applications on the Madison (Pahasapa) aquifer system in South Dakota. Final report, October 1, 1976--September 30, 1977

Description: Pertinent geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data for the Madison Formation underlying western South Dakota are presented in text and in graphic form. A temperature anomaly in west central South Dakota makes 130 to 160/sup 0/F water available at depths of less than 3500 ft. A central geothermal space heating system designed for Midland, South Dakota indicates that by 1980 geothermal heat will be competitive with existing energy sources. Preliminary tests indicate the superiority of 304 or 316 s… more

Impacts of the national energy programme on solar economics

Description: The National Energy Plan (NEP) sets as a goal the use of solar energy in two and a half million homes in 1985. A key provision of the NEP (as well as congressional alternatives) provides for the subsidization of solar equipment. The extent to which these subsidies (income tax credits) might offset the impact of continued energy-price control is examined. Regional prices and availability of conventional energy sources (oil, gas, and electricity) were compiled to obtain a current and consistent s… more
