MHD Magnet Technology Development Program Summary, September 1982

Description: The program of MHD magnet technology development conducted for the US Department of Energy by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the past five years is summarized. The general strategy is explained, the various parts of the program are described and the results are discussed. Subjects covered include component analysis, research and development aimed at improving the technology base, preparation of reference designs for commercial-scale magnets with associated design evaluations, … more

Characterization of double-shell slurry feed grout produced in a pilot-scale test

Description: Current plans for disposal of the low-level fraction of selected double-shell tank (DST) wastes at Hanford, Washington include grouting. Grout disposal in this context is the process of mixing low-level liquid waste with cementitious powders. and pumping the resultant slurry to near-surface, underground concrete vaults. Once the slurry is in the vaults. the hydration reactions that occur result in the formation of a highly impermeable solid product that binds and encapsulates the radioactive an… more

Nuclear equation of state studied with high-energy heavy ions

Description: The current knowledge and theoretical speculations concerning the nuclear equation of state is discussed. Conventional relativistic nuclear fluid dynamics, which is based on the assumption that the nucleon mean free path is zero and consequently neglects the interpenetration of the target and projectile upon contact, is also discussed. Results of such calculations performed for three different equations of state are compared with experimental data for both all impact parameters and central coll… more

Collector sealants and breathing. Final Report, 25 September 1978-31 December 1979

Description: The objectives of this program were: (1) to investigate the pertinent properties of a variety of possible sealants for solar collectors and identify the most promising candidates, and (2) to study the effect of breathing in flat-plate, thermal solar collector units. The study involved two types of sealants, Class PS which includes preformed seals or gaskets and Class SC which includes sealing compounds or caulks. It was the intent of the study to obtain data regarding initial properties of cand… more
