Composition of eta carbide in Hastelloy N after aging 10,000 hr at 815/sup 0/C

Description: The composition of the eta carbide in Hastelloy N containing 0.7 wt percent Si in the alloy approaches M/sub 12/C, rather than M/sub 6/C as indicated in the alloy literature. The silicon content of the eta phase in this case was about 25 at. percent, much higher than has been observed in less highly alloyed material. The data do not permit a definition of the limiting compositions of the phases.

Relaxation behavior of 2 1/4 Cr--1 Mo steel under multiple loading

Description: Multiple-loading relaxation data for annealed 2/sup 1///sub 4/ Cr-1 Mo steel are reported for times to 100 hr and for temperatures in the range 450 to 566/sup 0/C. At 450 and 482/sup 0/C the relaxation strength rises with the plastic flow stress, and recovery phenomena are not very significant in the time span of concern. At 510, 538, and 566/sup 0/C the relaxation behavior during the first loading is unusual in the sense that for a period the relaxation rate is almost independent of stress. Th… more

Thermal stress and creep fatigue limitations in first wall design

Description: The thermal-hydraulic performance of a lithium cooled cylindrical first wall module has been analyzed as a function of the incident neutron wall loading. Three criteria were established for the purpose of defining the maximum wall loading allowable for modules constructed of Type 316 stainless steel and a vanadium alloy. Of the three, the maximum structural temperature criterion of 750/sup 0/C for vanadium resulted in the limiting wall loading value of 7 MW/m/sup 2/. The second criterion limite… more

Determination of nitrogen in boron carbide with the Leco UO-14 Nitrogen Determinator

Description: Use of various metals as fluxes for releasing nitrogen from boron carbide in the Leco Nitrogen Determinator was investigated. Metals such as iron, chromium, and molybdenum that wet the graphite crucible all promoted nitrogen release. Tin, copper, aluminum, and platinum did not wet the graphite and were of no value as fluxes. A procedure for sample handling and the resulting performance of the method are described. The precision at 0.06 to 0.6 percent nitrogen averaged 4 percent relative standar… more
