Description: Geological environments present in southwestern New Mexico include thick sequences of sedimentary rock including limestone, conglomerates, sandstone, and shale: igneous intrusions with associated metal deposits; caldera centers, margins, and outflow facies; and basins with marginal faults and thick late Cenozoic sedimentary fillings. Drilling rate changes when air drilling is switched to mist drilling. [Claystone]

Description: Eight shallow (30-foot-deep) holes were drilled in four formations to determine if the reduction in penetration rate that usually occurs when air drilling is changed to mist drilling might be due to the physical action of drilling a wet, soapy rock. The results showed an average loss of 9.3%, with the greatest loss occurring in limestone. Underground nuclear explosions at Astrakhan, USSR

Description: The three underground nuclear explosions recorded in 1980 and 1981 by Hagfors Observatory in Sweden are in the vicinity of Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. They are believed to be associated with the development of a gas condensate field discovered in 1973. The gas producing horizons are in limestones at 4000 m depth. Effective-stress-law behavior of Austin chalk rocks for deformation and fracture conductivity

Description: Austin chalk core has been tested to determine the effective law for deformation of the matrix material and the stress-sensitive conductivity of the natural fractures. For deformation behavior, two samples provided data on the variations of the poroelastic parameter, {alpha}, for Austin chalk, giving values around 0.4.
