South Loop New Town Urban Pollutant Study: Status Report. Comparison of Two Proposed Franklin St. Connector Alternatives

Description: Preliminary results are given of a study of probable carbon monoxide pollution concentrations in the South Loop area that may arise from either of two alternative Franklin Street Connector plans proposed by the Chicago Bureau of Street Traffic and by Alan M. Voorhees and Associates.

Conservation of ethylene feedstock for the commodity polymer market through the radiation induced production of polyketones and polysulfones. [Gamma rays and electron beams]

Description: Because of the increase in cost of foreign oil, ethylene costs have increased markedly within the last several years. There is presently a sizable incentive to reduce raw material cost for basic polymer manufacture. The polyketones, synthesized from ethylene and CO, and the polysulfones, synthesized from ethylene and SO/sub 2/, utilizing high energy radiation, offers one such possibility. The process has the additional advantage in that CO and SO/sub 2/ usually considered as wastes and pollutan… more

Ion desorption cross section of carbon containing molecules on aluminum and stainless steel

Description: It was proposed that the ''pressure bump'' phenomenon observed in the CERN ISR proton machine is caused by ion induced desorption of gas molecules from the vacuum chamber wall.Residual gas molecules ionized by the proton beam are accelerated by the beam to wall potential (order of kV), and bombard the chamber wall with near normal incidence sputtering off molecules. Mass spectrometric analysis of the residual gas content showed that gas molecules desorbed during the pressure bump are mostly car… more

Exposure of high-temperature alloys in carbonaceous gas atmospheres

Description: Light and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate changes resulting from exposure of eight commercial high temperature alloys in carbonaceous atmospheres. Samples were exposed in CO, CH$sub 4$, or CO/CH$sub 4$ mixtures up to 900$sup 0$C and 6.2 MPa. All alloys were actively attacked. Surface finish and preoxidation influenced the extent of corrosion. Reduction of NiO, giving a high surface concentration of Ni, promoted catalytic decomposition of CH$sub 4$. Further work is indicated b… more

Auger and Reaction Studies of Poisoning by Sulfur and Regeneration of Metal Synthesis Gas Catalysts. Progress Report: April 1, 1975--December 15, 1975

Description: The objective is to determine the rate and mechanism of (1) sulfur poisoning and (2) of regeneration of metal catalysts used in synthesis gas conversion to hydrocarbon products. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) is used for surface analysis, and in-situ reaction studies of deactivation and regeneration are combined with microreactor studies to quantify sulfur poisoning. An all-glass internal recirculation microreactor has been designed, fabricated, debugged and integrated into a metal-free feed… more
